Any recommendations on some go to places for photography while in Charleston? Appreciate any ideas that might not be in the typical travel brochures.
Go to a local gift shop & browse through the post cards. These are often the most scenic & historic places in the area.

Spent 1 day only in Charleston as part of a 3 month tour of the U.S. 18 months ago. You can read my blog entry here
http://americanwanderings.wordpress.com/ just scroll down to the 'A day out in Charleston' entry on 18/11/2011. In brief; don't miss the Peninsula Sunset, The Avenal bridge offers some less usual views from the Harbour boat trip, and also NPS Fort Sumpter - where I thought one could get a very concise and unbiased study into the causes of the Civil War - (though you may well have different views to mine). Get a map from the tourist office and get around on the trolleys (free) and maybe pop into an expensive art gallery. Nice Audobons, but $90k was a tad out of my price range.
Enjoy.
You might try the north- west end of Folly beach( turn left just before the Holiday Inn). Has a lighthouse and seascape photo ops. Nice beach walk too,
charleston and the surrounding area is one of the most stunningly beautiful i have seen. the battery as well as the old homes can't be missed. some of the same families live in the homes their ancestors built in the 1700s. james island and other beaches are unbelievable. i hope you plan on being there a while, and i know you will enjoy it!
