Thanks for all the suggestions I purchased a Sigma 150-500. If it doesn't work out I can sell it without much loss.
The Sigma lens will work just fine. Just take the time to learn what it does in given situations and think how to compensate. Once you learn the lens you'll be taking great photos and we'll all be envying you on being published.
I have the Tamron lens in question, and I never expected to hand-hold it ... hell, I'm lucky if my arms don't get tired from my wristwatch! I purchased a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 SP lens, loved it so much I've purchased the 200-500 and the 24-135 lens. Could you buy better lens? Sure, but IF budget is a factor and you aren't shooting for National Geographic or making your sole living from the photos you take with the lens, the Tamron will give you good quality photos. So will Sigma ... cuz I believe MT Shooter, and don't want him coming after me with his big ole arms when I'm just a runt! Seriously, however, I do really like Tamron and have never been disappointed with any of the lens I own.
