Not sure if this was sent successfully - if so pls ignore the first version as this is more comprehensive:
I'm in India traveling with my D7000 and David Busch's Compact Field Guide to the Nikon D 7000 thinking I would spend some time fine tuning my use of the camera on manual setting. I must have selected a wrong setting (or two) and now nothing seems to work as before. My primary problem that in Program mode the sub command dial - which used to control the shutter speed doesn't work at all. Rotating it does nothing. The command dial still adjusts the f stop as before. Also I used to be able to use the multi selector to move the focal point around. I tried a reset, but I think,I've just made matters worse. Everything worked just fine until I decided to get smart - now I'm stuck having to use the camera on auto (something I've never done before). Any help would be wildly appreciated.

When I played with my D5100 and messed stuff up, pressing the two green buttons for 3 to 5 seconds reset the camera to factory defaults. Maybe give that a try.

I'm not sure which green buttons - perhaps we have different buttons on our cameras. But tanks.

If your having a problem in 'program mode, shoot in 'S' mode or 'shutter priority,' you choose the shutter speed and the camera selects the apeture? I hardly ever use 'program'.

That's a good idea. Thanks. Would love to be able to use the sub command dial again, though.

On the D5100 there are only 2 buttons with green dots on them.

-In the Menu go to the "Custom Setting Menu" (3rd from top)
-go to section "f Controls"
-go to "f6 Customize command dials"
-go to "Change main/sub"

Mine is set to "off" I'm not certain this is the problem but it's worth checking. How are your other two cameras performing for you?

Fwiw, my f6 customize menu is set at:

Reverse - Off
Change - Off
Aperture - On
Menus - Off

I haven't messed with this ever so that should be the defaults.

Also, at the top of the "Custom Settings Menu" is the option to reset all your custom settings which, if all else fails, should do the trick for you.

I've got 30 exposed rolls and have had arguments at, so far, 17
different airports about film not going through the scanner
But first I have to explain what film is. 10 more airports to go. Wish I could find a lab that processes film in Hyderabad.

You can also keep things in AUTO, and learn to use exposure compensation to control your imaging. This is a good exercise, but requires keeping an eye on the compensation. Use the HISTOGRAM to evaluate the images. You do not want to crush blacks nor blow out whites. In digital, it is always better to watch the whites and keep them at bay. Blowing out the whites in digital, and you have nowhere to go. Underexpose that same image, and you have many options.

Good shooting!

Thanks. I'd still like the option of having the program setting work the way it did before I messed around with the controls. The command dial adjusted appature and the sub command dial adjusted for shutter speed. Anyone know how I can get it to works this way again?

I wonder if the dial just didn't go bad... could you open a trouble ticket with Nikon?
