Based on your title and not your comment (really need to know the "why"), you are trying to lessen HD space. If this is the real question, there are several solutions.
Why not? My objective is to change .nef into good quality .jpg in another folder on my 1T C drive. Then reorganize sequence, and finally add to a Thumb Drive that will play a slide show. Do TV's recognize .nef? Don't know.
Space for my current pictures has 688 GB of space available with a backup drive. No worries mate.
