SB, you forgot to add, "electrical grid systems functioning"

People find it to much more fun to argue from a position of flexible-ignorance rather than understanding the details of the subject at hand. Drbobcameraguy is an example of perhaps, probably, for sure, does not know the meaning of the " socialism and finally communism" he is spouting off about.

People jump on social programs as being the extreme socialism. Those who protest, would protest very loudly if their so-called "socialistic" advantages were cut off. The Good Socialism is where the people work together to finance the common good. Republican President D. Eisenhower's interstate road system is an example; financed by tax money. Bad Socialism is tax breaks and money giveaways to petrochemical [oil] companies that make billions.

Drbobcameraguy and others of that ilk should educate themselves.

Socialism: "allocate resources using central planning, as in a command economy. Examples of greater social needs include transportation, defense, education, health care, and preservation of natural resources. Some also define the common good as caring for those who can't directly contribute to production. Examples include the elderly, children, and their caretakers."

Communism is confused with Stalinist era government. If people are going to be against something they should understand what it is.

Oh! let us not forget the USA form of government:

IMOH, I thought your response and brief citing was top-notch responsible commentary, without the always tempting notion to degrade the discussion to the "low-ball", snarky, "I'll pray for you" type of seemingly sarcastic offering by DrBobtheCameraGuy. Nice to hear some thoughtful people survived the "Drain The Swamp" years. "Here's looking at ya" neighbor! Apologize for being late to the discussion.

Thanx for the U-Tube link. The roll call at the end was very touching. As a fellow U.P.'er (Iron Mountain), I follow the same tradition that you mentioned every Nov.10th.

A very nice capture, vonzip, but could it not possibly be an EasternKingbird? That white stripe at bottom of tail is usually a strong ID marking.

I just watched Y.A.'s speech at Kyle Rote's funeral. It wasn't too many years ago. He seemed firmly in control of his sp ech and mental faculties. Being a long-suffering Browns fan, I remember Y.A.'s last year because of the fierce rivalry then between Browns and Giants. That turned out to be Cleveland's magical season, as they beat the heavily favored Unitas-led Colts 27-0. Ah, the good, ole days!

As an Iowan, I think all states should adopt a non-political commission to redraw districts when needed to conform to census results, etc. Illinois is a prime example.

Just Google the 2011 redistricting maneuvers of Madigan.
I agree with your idea, but I sense a problem or two in implementation; the current us vs. them mentality in politics, and in society in general will make that goal like Sisyphus rolling the rock up the mountain-- attainable, but not likely. Also, I would wonder about the selection process of commision members. Should they be appointed or elected positions, and how do you guarantee non-partisan members? Just one of several issues that plague our society today. We need new, unifying, intelligent (leaves out you know who) leaders that can put well-being of the nation ahead of partisan old-school style politicians.

I have watched the first three and anxiously await the remaining episodes. I was a young man during the "Vietnam Era" and believe that we need to be reminded of what war demands of its participants. That era and the war itself is I.M.H.O. the root cause of the current distrusst of the government.

I find, without trying to sound maudlin, that the footage is a brutal reminder and lesson to all that all govt.'s are to be treated with skepticism. WWI, with the brutality and human sacrifice, served to cure Great Britain yyyyof it's naivete and costs that "patriotism" demanded. I believe the same lessons have been learned by U.S. citizens. I think Ken Burn's series helps to keep skepticism of govt. fresh.

I thought your analysis was well thought out. I'm a retiree and consider myself a progressive. I believe the true meaning of "tax reform" will be divulged by the number of "across the aisle" legislators who are invited by the Republicans to actually help in any "honest" attempt at tax reform. I'm allfor simplifying the tax code by closing countless numbers of loopholes; However, you are right on in naming the ways corporations duck and evade. Let's see how far this effort really gets. My guess is that "the swamp" will erode the efforts.

I was born and raised in U.P.(Iron Mountain). Ford had a large plant there, which produced the old Ford Woodies until the plant was shut down and moved to Brookpark,Ohio in `52. I still recall many auto ferry trips across the Straights before the Mackinac Bridge opened in `57. A UHH member,"Yooper2", has posted many scenic shots from around the U.P. Have'nt heard from him lately.
