What a great post. Having had the privilege of being loved by a number of wonderful dogs and wanting to add to this thread and honor all the wonderful "best friends" I've had over the years. It's a little long but well worth the time to read. I don't know who wrote it, it wasn't me but I saved it so it could be shared later.

A Dog's Purpose, (from a 6-year-old)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life--
like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.

Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Be always grateful for each new day.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY because you don't know if it'll be your last!

That man will be missed by all in my generation for some time to come. One of those men rich with talent that could express a paragraph in a sentence.

I totally agree. Your description reminds me of times gone by and all the times I listened to Paul Harvey on the radio. Thanks to the OP for sharing this. Great start to my day! Also kudo's to Dodge for a commercial that makes you think, and is entertaining. It's nice to see a commercial that's not all about force feeding you their product but gets their message across. Hope this starts a trend.

Good Day!

So sorry for your loss of one of the best friends anyone can have in their lifetime. A person can have many friends but not many will give you the loyalty and love the you will get from a dog. I lost my best friend of 16 years "Buster" this May. I still think of him every day and hope to see him again. I still find myself cutting his little piece of sausage, toast and egg pushing it to the corner of my plate only to remember he's not waiting for me to finish and put it in his bowl. There's something about us "dog people" that when we lose one of our friends it's only time that turns the pain to warm memories. I've included another little poem that will hopefully help.
God Bless

When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals,
The fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished,
Not one was quite the same,
God said, "I'll walk this earth of mine,
And give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide,
And everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him,
Until its strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth,
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me."

Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end,
I've turned my own name back to front,
And call you DOG, my friend."

Just a FYI since so many of us like to take pictures of birds or just plain like to watch them.
