I don't know anything about the Tamron 24 70 lens ,but I do have a Canon 24 70 and I love it on my 60D and never take it off.
as for being 5'1" can say I'm only 5' 6" and works ok for me.

I use Nero Express works very good Don't know if you can get a free download
Tramsey you can straighten with Picasa 3 very easy and its free download 8-)
Look at the ones that turned out the best and check your settings and go from there.
I LOVE SNOW............. What I don't like is that it comes in the winter
