Second, set your camera to AF-S or ONE SHOT. This setting makes the camera stay focussed on the same spot as long as you keep the shutter button depressed half way.

The Great Courses is offering its "Fundamentals of Photography" course on sale...priced at $35 for download and $40 for DVD. 24 half-hour lectures taught by Joel Sartore National Geographic Fellow and regular contributor. I have the course and think it's great value (and I paid a lot more than this offer). Here is the link to the offer.

I paid a lot more for my copy of this course too, but found it to be worth the price. They have a new course taught by Mr Sartore now. It’s “How to Shoot Great Travel Photo’s” or something close to that. Shorter and less expensive.

I am looking at getting this flash unit for my D3200. I would be interested in any comments from a user of this flash unit. Thank you.

I use this flash with my D40 and D7100. No frills but more power than built-in flash. Plus doesn't use the main camera battery. And tilts, but no swivel.

My bad! Sorry! You are right. I wasn't around but my dad spent the war in B-24's and he stayed in the service. I grew up as an Air Force brat. The Viet Nam conflict ended right when I became eligible for the draft.

I'll bet your Dad had some fine stories to tell if you could get him to talk about them. My Father was in tanks with Patton and he wouldn't speak much about it unless he was drinking a little.
If you get a chance you should watch the program the OP was referring to. Eye opening to say the least.

I watched an interesting show from Nova last night about Spitfires that took millions of pictures over Germany during WW II. They would take two pictures of the area with a 60° overlap using five cameras mounted in the plane. When they were developed, they were viewed on a stereoscope, so the Photographic Interpreters could see a 3-D image. This gave them a much better idea of what was on the ground. It gave a view similar to Google Earth 3-D, with views from different angles possible.

If you have Netflix, or something similar, you can watch it, "3D Spies of WW II."

Jerry, I also saw that show. Wonderful. Lucky for me I recorded it and intend to watch it again next rainy day.
This thread has somehow (as usual here) veered off track to be about cars. Probably by those young enough not to remember WWII.

Just got this camera which is a major upgrade from my D5000. Can you recommend a book to help me get the most from it? I wasn't thrilled with the Dave Busch book.

Which Dave Busch book did you get? The Field Guide or D7100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography?

I have the Nikon D7100 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas and it's OK. More help then the manual that came with the camers but still to much info on general photography. Composition, lighting and such. All important things but not unique to the D7100.

I'm waiting on Thom Hogans book. I have the one for the D40 and it's just about the camera. And just about everything you'd ever want or need to know. Not cheap but worth it.

When I began my part of this discussion with
"Jerry, I want to get LR4 but have a simple/beginner question. I do not use PhotoShop. MUST I use PhotoShop to use Lightroom? My intent is to use Lightroom for ingesting/cataloging photos. Not PP. Thanks for any help."
it was my intent to get LR4 for organizing my Nikon photos, NOT post processing. But after reading this example from rpavich I may change my mind. This actually answers more questions than I intended to ask. I'm going to get LR4 as soon as I get through with this HS graduation season. (If it ever ends)

Why in the world would you get something that's specifically designed for post processing of photographic images, (and is stellar at that particular job, I might add)....and then not use it for that purpose?

Because I don't need a post processing app. I already have one. What I need and asked about is a program to ingest and catalog my images.

Thanks Jerry and Searcher. I just didn't want to go out and buy Lightroom and THEN find out it was no good unless I paid for PS too. I appreciate your help

A Nikon D40X w/ 18-55 & a 55-200mm lense. Have only used it for one month now. My girlfriend & I went to Key West & Ft. Lauderdale for a few weeks.

I've been shooting photos since 1964 When I got my first SLR camera ... a ZEISS w/18/55 & 55-200 mm lenses. Joined them 4-H Club then & began my adventure then.

Now.... I'm baffled by all the settings & only used it in AUTO mode while I was down there ... got 5 GB worth of really great shots!

Have bought several books on compostion, use of my D40X, & a really nice one on Starting.

I'm disabled, an accident with anti-freeze in my Mt. Dew. Someone at work wanted my job. Lefty me with only the use of my left hand. Limited use of my right hand.

Questions;

1.) can I use my Sigma flash w/ my new camera ?
2.) how do you use the other settings
3.) what is the best way to get up to speed with this thing...I'm no novice at SLR cameras...just am confused by all the settings on my new find.

Bomar, About 3 yrs ago I was in the place you are now with DSLR's. I had some knowledge of photography but not these new camera's. The D40/40x manual was of some limited benefit but the most helpful book I have ever seen is Thom Hogan's "Complete Guide to:"..There's a series of them. Find them here:
http://www.bythom.com/
It comes on DVD and if you wish (I did) you can get a bound copy. They're not cheap, but they are worth every penny if you really want to know the camera.

I have used this site before to check shutter count on my D40 AND the D7100 IS listed in the "Successfully tested models include:", but I get an error message, "Sorry, something went wrong, we have been notified about this and are working on it". The camera is so new it's probablely a coming attraction. Thanks for the help. I'll try again in a few days.

We had this discussion just last week here. Search for "Where NOT to buy". Look on page 6 or maybe 7. This is the company in question. I have had no personal dealings with them but after reading all the postings here, I never will. Good luck.
