Just got this camera which is a major upgrade from my D5000. Can you recommend a book to help me get the most from it? I wasn't thrilled with the Dave Busch book.

Which Dave Busch book did you get? The Field Guide or D7100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography?

I have the Nikon D7100 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas and it's OK. More help then the manual that came with the camers but still to much info on general photography. Composition, lighting and such. All important things but not unique to the D7100.

I'm waiting on Thom Hogans book. I have the one for the D40 and it's just about the camera. And just about everything you'd ever want or need to know. Not cheap but worth it.

Nikon D7100 for Dummies at Amazon for $18.41

Personally, I like the Dummies books. They really speak to me. Can't attest to this particular one, though.

I pre-purchased Nikon D7100: From Snapshots to Great Shots by John Batdorf -- it has a publication date of July 21, 2013, but Amazon has it available as a pre-purchase, so I'm not really sure how good it is (or isn't).

In the meantime, I purchased and have read David Busch's Nikon D7100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography (David Busch's Digital Photography Guides). Very good and easy to understand -- I'm on my 2nd reading. Also, an ebook available for $9.99, The Nikon D7100 Experience - The Still Photography Guide to Operation and Image Creation with the Nikon D7100 by Douglas Klostermann.

My problem with the David Busch book was that it could not explain the best settings for HDR, ISO sensitivity and a few other things that I was looking for. I had to have a friend help me with that.

amkras, STVest recommended the "Nikon D7100 for Dummies" and I wholeheartedly second that motion! I, personally, have a Nikon D5100 for which I purhased the "Dummies" book. The author is Julie Adair King (for both of these Nikon cameras) and she has a knack for explaining things VERY thoroughly as well as simply. Forget about any other book---get the D7100 book, you will not regret it!

I have the David Busch book. "Nikon D7000" and love it. It's 500 pages long, well indexed and contains everything you need to know to master the D7000. But you need to read (and re-read) it, with camera in hand. A solid text about a great pro-sumer camera.
