Well that is the Northwest. There is a relationship between overcast days and lots of water for waterfalls! : )

Never. Once my SD card got bent and I had difficulty inserting it in the slot, but even then it worked and I could transfer everything.

I'm more concerned that you think that photographers 'shoot' things. Placing or pointing a camera at something is not shooting it. It is in preparation for gathering some light from that direction.

Perhaps they were looking at the background and projected the resolution there on the head, somehow.

But I had a similar experience a few months ago. I had an exhibit of old paintings in a bakery belonging to my grandson (at his insistence). A newspaper in the small town (about 75,000 pop. I guess) wanted to know if I could send some photographs of the paintings. I felt that I was very prepared for this because I had made up a little booklet of the paintings with prices, etc., and so I sent copies of them.

Now I had purposely made lower resolution views (about 1.3 MgB per view) so that they could be sent by email easily. But the newspaper reporter who had asked for them shot back a message: he wondered if I had higher resolution files? Well I did of course, in this case only about 4.6 MgB, because I had recorded digitally recorded the paintings back in 2004. So I had to dig up the old files and send them. But I was shocked that a newspaper wanted higher resolution because in the past their dpi were about 84, the last I knew. I guess a lot has changed since I had to constantly degrade the resolution in order to have them accepted for publication successfully and later in order to be able to send files email to keep the size of the files down!

Now it looks like I need to copy everything over to get up into the 16 mgb size files I guess. Of course the higher resolution is definitely they way I want to see things, but I'm not used to anyone asking for higher resolution for publication in a mass media.

The weather, of course is related to the abundance of water, so that there can be waterfalls!

I'll just add that I also ordered a copy from ABE books after reading your post. But I paid a little more: $6.18 for a hard cover in good condition. I would say that all of Ansel Adams books are a good buy at this time. The reproductions are usually very good and since he died a relatively short time ago his material is declining in value but that will change as it thins out. But any price would be worth it for his books, ultimately.

The 'Liberal' policy is probably low property tax.

The reason this happens is that the photographer is NOT looking at what he is recording. He is 'shooting' the subject or scene. Without aim.

I am going to return to Tucson as well as the Petrified Forest area and Phoenix in April 2013. And places in between. Been working on the itinerary as usual before we go. If anyone has suggestions for places less well known that are not too strenuous to reach I would appreciate it. You don't need to publish it here necessarily but tell me at rjt@rockcreekexperiment.com. I will visit many well known sites and ones that I have been to before, as well. Thanks for any help.

There is a new wetland/ bird reserve to the west of Tigard. I don't know if it is within or adjacent to Tigard but its very close. Take Highway 99 W. and it is just beyond a large wrecking yard.

One last thought on this problem. An ink jet print on paper is probably mor permanent than a print made in a darkroom. Silver oxidizes over time. Carbon doesn't. So as temporary means the modern media are better but paper remains (at this time) the more permanent long period storage. Does anyone know about the 'metal' prints that are advertised?

No its not going to be all right. I've already lost images, documents and data even though I was actively attempting to be redundant and to store the material. No one is really working on the root of the problem. Also has anyone heard of a new 5 1/4" disk reader? The early CDs I made were unreadable withing a year because the software changed! An active attempt at dealing with the problem is needed.

You are absolutely correct to make prints on paper which has its own short lifespan. We still have drawings from the Renaissance (1500 AD). I find this somewhat discouraging because the idea of reducing everything to a series of O and 1's was exciting. I have had a personal problem trying to get data from my old 5 1/4" disks. I had to travel 70 miles to a machine which still ran 5 1/4" disks but also had a hard drive and a CD writer. However the owner of this machine died on me and I was unable to complete the translation of data (nor able to purchase the machine).

After a while one could end up spending all of their time doing nothing but backing up old work. The changes in hardware and software seems to accelerate. Has anyone tried opening a MS Word file from 1998? (One can still read it from Open Office and then save it in a modern MS Word .doc form, but for how long will this be available)

We need a modern equivalent of paper. Otherwise we have to use paper.
