yes a Nikon 500mm F:4 with a 1.4 convertor attached all the time. Photographing birds takes alot of patience and practice practice practice. There are those days I wonder why and darn near pull my hair out as to why I am doing this. Only one part of my passion for the birds inherited from my grand parents. Once you walk out that door everything counts subject wise which builds your stock photos. There less exspensive lens to invest into that will do the same type of work. The 300-400- 500 & 600mm lens are known to cause divorce. If you look at the price tag you will never buy it, look at the dream lens as a investment and how much am I realy going to use this big lens, you will somehow find a way to fund your lens. Bigger better paint brushes is what they are. I have no regrets on mine.

I have been using Blurb for a while to do my Photo Books. I am also very happy with their product and also I like the option to show a preview of the books on-line.

I use my 100-400 with a 1.4 ex on my 1D3, so I keep the AF. I also use a 7D with a 300 f2.8 + a 2.0 extenden on a monopod. My first setup goes with me in the car, the second one I use to get photos of bald eagles and other larger birds - that one I use mostly where I live.

(just to show how great CANON is !)
..This gear is in very nice shape never been abused. Properly stored and cleaned. I have never had any issues with my gear the only reason I am selling is that I want to shoot with Nikon.
Since I was a CPS member the gear was serviced regularly at Canon Canada. I make my living with this gear so it needs to work every time all the time without issues.
All gear is serviced regularly and kept in the best shape possible.
I do have some boxes for some gear
1 Canon 1Ds Mark II with, charger, 4 batteries, AC coupler, body cap, eye cup, strap, box, manual and cables $1700
1 Canon 1D Mark III with charger x 2, batteries x 2, strap, body cap, eye cup and manual $1700 way after focusing issues
1 Canon 7D with grip, charger x 2, batteries x 3, cap, eye cup, strap, box , cables, manual and was just bought in January 16 2012 $1400
1 Canon 17-40mm f 4 comes with both caps hood $700
1 Canon 24-70mm f 2.8 comes with both caps hood $1300
1 Canon 70-200mm f 2.8 IS comes with pouch, caps, hood, tripos ring and box $1600
1 Canon 550 EX Flash comes with pouch and foot $225
2 Canon 5880 EX Flash comes with pouch and foot $300 each
1 Canon external power pack for flash comes with pouch $75
1 Canon shutter release switch with box $55
1 Off shoe cord $25
1 Canon AC coupler for 1Ds Mark II, 1Ds Mark I, 1D Mark I , 1 D Mark II, 1D Mark II N $50
Total if bought separately $7705
These prices is what I see the same gear going for on here I will sell the complete kit for $6900 today on if not going for a trade in tomorrow. This is today only so if you want a fantastic starter kit for wedding, sports, or just to start a photography business here is your chance. Perfect for the seasoned pro or a student just starting out.
I might have boxes for the flashes but not 100% sure on that I do not usually keep boxes but i will give all that I have. There is also extra batteries for the 1Ds Mark II that should be good I think an extra 5 so 9 batteries in total for the 1Ds Mark II.
Priced for quick sale
You could buy it and slip it up and make just under $1000
I also would be interested in trading for Nikon gear
No shipping, no pay pal local deal face to face cash only

Gerrymarie,
Just in case you are interested in buying used equipment, Canon has a forum called POTN (Photography on the Net) and it has a Buy/sell page. Friends of mine have bought and were very happy with the equipment and saved themselves a lot of money.

Maybe I missed it, but what mode were you using?
Auto, P, TV or AV?? Second question, was your 'AF' switch set to 'AF'? Were you using center point focusing?
I do a lot of bird images and hardly ever use a tripod - maybe a monopod at times.
If we could get answers to some of these questions, it would help a lot!
Just my 2 cents!

On the dial, move it to TV, that is Shutter speed priority... that means you select the shutter by moving the wheel and the camera will figure out the best aperture (opening of lens).
Have a great day!

Here is from another 5D2 user...the 24-70 f2.8 would also be a good option. 70-200 might be a bit too long to take a group shot. I own the 24-105 and the 24-70 and for this situation, I would use the 24-70 (which is on my 5D2) most of the time.
Also software like Noise Ninja does a great job reducing the grain from high ISO!
Just my 2 cents!
