Hello fellow shooters. I have the age old question:
How can I make money on my photography start up biz.

CLICK...Your Life In Pictures
That's my business name. I have been in love with photography for a very long time. Friends and family have been telling me I should start a business. So I am trying.

I have many young families around me and I have been doing photo shoots for practice. The parents go wild with appreciation. They love my work. I am pretty good with children and I always get great candid shots with natural lighting.

I have had a few family reunion shoots where I did get paid but only $100 for 3 hours work. Then many more hours on the post processing.

As of now I do not own any advanced cameras. I use my Nikon D5100.

Problem is only a few will pay me but yet they love the photos enough to print the and I see many of my photos being used.

How can I overcome this problem of not being viewed as a professional who would get paid?
Hello fellow shooters. I have the age old question... (show quote)

One of the first things you should do to do is identify your market and product. Then play the old Who, What, Where, When and WHY game. Make a portfolio that's compatible with your market. You might have to cut your shooting fee to get into the market but charge more for the finished product If people like what you shoot they'll pay extra for it But WHY do they like it? Maybe you have a style that made a pic that your customer LOVED and that style can be promoted. Good Luck!!!

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to affording things. I personally look at Sigma before Nikon to see if there is an equivalent.
It has been my experience that many Sigma lens perform just as well as the Nikon lens at a fraction of the cost.

The only thing I have ever had a concern with is how Sigma makes such a great lens at a fraction of the Nikon equivalent? Is Sigma an inferior lens as far as build quality goes because of inferior quality parts or is Nikon just jacking up the lens price because it is a NIKON and people will pay it.

My Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM lens is much larger than the Nikon version, heavier at just over a pound and focuses faster. Now in this case the Sigma was $85 more than the Nikon but in my opinion is a much nicer and better made lens.

There is so much profit in OEM lenses that Third party Mfr's like Sigma can copy all the parts and use same quality glass and make a good profit. Since most of us do photography as a hobby your viewing audience can't tell if you used Sigma or Nikon. Magazine editors might be able to tell. I've been using the Sigma 24-76mm and have no complaints Also use their telephotos and am very happy with the results.

My "Hog" friends, I like to thank all of you the ones who gave me advises to my Cuba photo travel, that was a lot of help, and my trip true the country grandeur experience.
-NOW I am heading first time on my life to the Wyoming,
Any advise where to fly, rent a car and shoot a landscapes and wildlife close to the road and less populated areas by the tourist.??

To me the best time to go into that territory would be Oct. The leaves are still on the trees in their brilliant Fall colors, The Elk are still in the Rut wolves are available in the Lamar Valley bears are all around The drive over Bear Tooth Pass should be avoided at all costs if you are trying to get anywhere the same day. The scenery is too gorgeous to be Legal The one time i went over it , it wasn' possible to drive more than 200 yards without stopping for a pic. Be Certain the Hit Ox Bow bend in Teton National park Also in Oct you may have some snow in higher elevations , alsolower but it Usually melts. If one pic speaks a thousand words check out my Website, many YNP and Teton scenery and animal pics. I live in Msla Mt. so can go there any time I want WEB: www.robinsnaturepics.smugmug.com. You'll have a ball!! To getto the web you may have to copy and paste the webpage

I wonder if any Viet Cong ever messed their pants from a view like this with the wind and heat in their face?

This mother had crossed heavy tourist traffic in Rocky Mountain National Park and was waiting for her yearling to cross as well.

Very pretty. Usually mom can act as a traffic cop and stop all traffic until Jr. crosses the road.

I shot these two images last year and as I was reviewing them I thought I saw some potential. I went to work on it with LR5 and this is the result. I'm not sure whether I went too far or maybe the image wasn't worth the effort. This was just an exercise in seeing what could be done with a bland and so so image. What do you think?? Please be honest and forthwith in your answers, so we may all gain from this discussion.

Gary, I tried some of my suggestions on your pic. Just spent a few minutes on it. Would be glad to post it with your permission, but everyone will probably rip it up,. No cropping. If they do, C'est la Vie

Your problem is quite common to those taking wildlife pics...the back ground screws them up. in this case, the weeds/grass. First thing I'd suggest is shooting as wide open as you can in the future to limit DOF and blur your background.. and now for the PP, try out lining the ducks with Magic Wand or similar, then do an INVERSE and play at blurring the grass/weeds more or adjusting the background lighting. Am assuming again you have PSE at least for PP. You got a great shot of the ducks per se but they blend too much with the background. It takes a lot of time to do what I've suggested and some may say it's cheating and it may not work, but that's photography for you. Good luck. Robin
