I have never used a UV filter for "protection."

I have and do. Twice, the 'clear' filter protected my lens. I also buy B&W. The lens hood is not always on and the lens cap is worthless against impact. Little price to pay for extra piece of mind.

How true!

What you really need to do is to find a local computer expert that you can pay to check all of this out. If your files are to be found, they will find them.

There's a lot of truth to most already said...but...
Yes, it can be upgraded to 6GB RAM. And yes, will work great to use MS Word and cruise the net. And yes, it will work with your photo editors, but not as fast as you may want. You did not say what camera you are using and how you shoot; RAW or jpg. The processing speed, at 64, is slow compared to models that are not much newer. If you shoot RAW and use any recent camera, you will not be happy with the processing speed of your edits. And if your files are large, it will definitely not be acceptable. And the more your shoot, and the bigger your catalog gets..the slower things will move (even referencing your files). And all comments about connectivity are not only true, but will further slow down your workflow.
And you didn't say what you are now using to gauge the improvement. If my main purpose was for photos, I would not take this deal that appears too good to turn down.
You may just be throwing away $125. The fact that you are asking means that you are not looking to throw away $$.

Shoot RAW. Edit the RAW file. Export in format that works for your purpose (Usually jpg). Just make sure you use a PP editor that is 'non-destructive'. This basically means that the original RAW file remains intact no matter what edits you have made. Therefore, if you make edits to the original RAW file, save them, and export-- you never degrade the original RAW file. Hope this helps.

This thread is probably one of the best and most important discussions that I have come across. 'Local' store is defined differently for all us. Living in the NY Metro area there are a ton of local stores. And probably they have all been mentioned here in one way or another. I own a store in my town that sells merchandise to the trade and retail. While one can purchase everything from the internet; as has been said here, they cannot purchase the expertise and help that a knowledgeable sales person can provide. In my business, this advice often saves the customer time, money on the actual purchase, and avoid costly mistakes. My town, has empty storefronts. The primary reasons are: too high asking rents and lousy service. I've been in my town for over 40 years and 'know' everyone. The demographics are at the very high income end. There is no reason for a good merchant, who wants to remain in business, to stay in business. Merchants who choose not to adapt to the changing landscape created by virtual shopping networks are doomed to fail. But, we as local residents, have a responsibility to do business with our local businesses. How often have you heard..'look at all the empty stores..our town looks like a ghost town!'. In many instances, the reason is that we go out of our way to purchase 'online' or, in the NY Metro area, travel to another area and buy exactly the same things that you could purchase in your home town for the same or slightly more money. And, get the service at home that you cannot get at the other place. So how does this affect 'you'? Vacancies equal local tax 'give-backs' to the property owner when tax certiorari proceedings occur. Empty stores beget empty stores because foot traffic declines. Empty storefronts depress real estate values in your hometown. In the end, the value of your home does not increase as you had wished. And, your local taxes are raised to make up for the loss of income due to the loss of commercial businesses. Let me be clear, it is not your responsibility to support lousy businesses in your local area. But you need to give them a chance. So, being fully chastised, my next purchase will be from a 'local' dealer, Berger Bros Camera.(The last home town camera store closed about 8 years ago). While 20 minutes away, still my 'county' and they do offer the type of service we all would like. As long as they are competitive, and they are, they will have my business. I'll pay the tax and gladly accept their service.

The 16GB of memory in non-negotiable.

Yes. And you should consider upgrading to the SSD drive. The fusion drive is a hybrid of a hard drive and flash drive. While faster than a standard hard drive, it still has the same potential (realistically actual) eventual failure of the hard drive. The SSD will give you not only longer life, but faster throughput when you are viewing and editing your files. 512 TB of storage is good as you can add external SSD drives to store your photos. In fact, the newer Thunderbolt connectors will be speedier than you can imagine. If you want to back up, without going crazy, you can purchase 2 SSD drives and keep them connected. Your set up should be saving to your primary external SSD and backing up to your 2nd SSD. Keep in mind that the iMac is the 'control center' and having this properly set up will make your editing and viewing experience much more fun.
Hope this helps.

At first I was going to get on your case for your “Smart Jewish businessmen” comment, but rather than that, I’ll go ahead and agree with you. I haven’t dealt with B&H, yet, but I have bought a few things from Adorama as well as selling them some older lenses and my dad’s old FE body, just to get some cash for them. Adorama is also run by “smart Jewish businessmen”, as they are closed on Saturdays, and close early on Fridays. I have found them to be honest and helpful.

Both of these replies are unacceptable. I am insulted by this nonsense. If you want to talk about good customer service and relations; then just smart businessmen would be enough. These two comments only reinforce continued anti-semitism with the direct implication that there are other kinds of 'Jews' who are not 'Smart Jewish Businessmen". Maybe unintended, but out there none the less.

“The motor and the lens mount can lose.” ???? Excuse me, but what the heck does that mean? Did you use the same quality communication when you sent the gear in to be repaired? I seriously doubt that a well-cared for camera just suddenly failed structurally. It was obviously abused or dropped.

Rjay, who made you head grammarian or orthographer? If you have a point, make it without disparaging someone! And, FYI... some people use auto correct and it may be possible that when typing 'came loose' the auto spell checker provided 'can lose'. And, Rbart did not notice the error. You 'can lose' the attitude.

The D7100 is now 5 years old, and surprisingly is still in production. You can buy a brand new D7100 from B&H for $697. I would not spend $500 to repair that camera. I would look into a refurbished D7200. You can get one, depending on where you buy, for less than $800. Since, the D7100 is still in production, you can sell your camera for parts at eBay. Nikon will not sell repair parts to unauthorized camera repair shops anymore. I can't answer your Canon question, even though I know photographers who own many of them. FF and Rebel Series. Good luck.

Now on to another thread. Camerapapi is right. 35-40 years ago the Islands, particularly St. Maarten, were a great place to find deals on camera equipment. NYC had a couple/few major retailers; but there was not the internet. This had a major impact on buying decisions. This is why places like the islands were so inviting for camera equipment. The exchange rates (dollar/Franc/Deutschmark) also had a significant impact. The cost of fashion and high end equipment from these countries, in the islands and with their trading partners, could be significantly less expensive in some of these 'tax free' zones.
This is not the case today. Especially with camera equipment. There is absolutely no reason to make any type of major camera or lens purchase in the islands; unless your's broke and you are in a desperate situation. Even that would not convince me. I could buy over the internet (from a major player) and have it shipped to me! Also, buying in(or from) your own country, and not buying grey market; ensures that the manufacturer will back up your product.
When traveling in Europe, I would go into certain stores just to compare prices. Even with today's Euro, camera equipment usually can be purchased for less in the USA.
So, my lesson learned is to buy at 'home' and buy from a reputable dealer.

Both companies are great and dependable. Big difference is that Robert's is smaller and their 'owners' are more accessible. Nelson runs Used Photo Pro and was formerly with KEH. His desire to build a better model for buying and selling used equipment has resulted in a terrific buying and selling experience. You can count on their ratings and customer service. If they have what you want...buy it.

Good reason. You might want to look for recent threads about B&H sending you letter re: paying CO Use Tax; as they notify CO Dep't of Finance about your purchase.
