What are the issues for making photographs out of videos?

Did you want to make a slide show (each images shows for several seconds) or a time lapse (a long event viewed in a short time)?

The bloosms are about 10 days away. I took this with a IR converted Nikon D80. 590nm

Take 6
Uprooted two full dandelion plants. Put them in a bowl with some warm water. Since I had two, I put them both at the same focal distance, and started the session. Everything worked, but I like the closer, full frame look of the earlier attempts.

Depending on how much time and pre-photo effort you want to invest, I wonder if you could set up some kind of studio light box around the plant outdoors without disturbing its roots. But what you were able to get was astounding as is. Nice work.

I am not worried about killing a dandelion!

Very nice! Best use I have ever seen for a dandelion.

Thanks! My neighbor makes sure I have plenty to choose from. :)

Thank you for sharing and that was great. Will have to look into time lapse. Thank for the inspiration. 👍👍

It was fun! You should give it a try.

This mornings take. 700 images at 10 second intervals. It looks like a cut dandelion has a limited life span that I exceeded. I may try digging up most of a plant for the next try.

thats cool! how long did it take, how many shots

This one ran about an hour with a image every 10 seconds, but I didn't use them all. There wasn't much movement the last 20 minutes.

I ran another session this morning with a bloom that was more closed. After 90 minutes, I had to leave for work. I'm excited to see how it turned out!

I saw some dandelions in the yard and I thought I'd try again to get a opening time lapse. Last year, I tried one outside, but the breeze and clouds made a poor clip. Here are some set-up shots and a link to the resulting video. This was a fun macro project!

For this session, I used a small sauce dish and a Pluto valve. This was the largest drop size so far. The bigger drops give taller columns. I also started watching the drops when the flash fired instead of only looking at the preview screen. This allows me to see where the second (or third) drops are even if they are outside of the frame. For the translucent drops, the flashes pointed at the backdrop worked best. For the cream drops, there needs to be a little bit of light that shines on the front to prevent shadows. I also tried a 50/50 cream and water mix. I only used it in the dish for fear of clogging the dropper valve. It took 50% more time than the thickened water to reach a high peak. With the white background, I found a bit of color in the cream looked better.
I am having a little issue with my drop system. The first drops have quite different timing than the subsequent ones. That makes using two different color liquids a bit tougher. It takes a few drops to get consistent results which than changes the liquid color in the dish.

I'm a month into my Pluto trigger. It's been fun trying different liquids and lighting. Right now, I like clear liquids in a clear container or liquid in a big dark pan that allows a good reflection.

Our indoor plants stand makes for a good work area. I'm not quite good enough yet to use milk in a container with food colored drops. By the time I got a good collusion, the milk was a mint color! Next time I'll have a test bowl of plain water and then switch to milk after the timing is set.

This time I used xanthan gum in the Pluto dropper and plain water in the dish. Two flashes with both first pointed at the background and then at the splash.

At first, I used a clear pie pan, but it was too small and it made funny reflections. Next U tried a red dish. It was still too small, but better than the clear dish. The final change was some green food coloring in the plain water.

Hi, appreciate your work and sharing. It helps encourage others to explore what and how they see the world around them. This can become a real specialty that develops with more time and experimentation. I watched a youtube video several weeks ago on the subject - thickening the liquid, adding food coloring, etc. Keep up the good work and please share more of your experiments.

Thanks! I did use thickener for this one. More to follow if we have some bad weather. :)

Its a little to technical for me but I love what you've done.

The single drop is not technical at all! You just need a flash, some water, a tripod and time. The pluto trigger just makes it more controllable.

Very cool. Far exceeds my crude homemade set up. I actually manually fired the flash based on getting used to the dripping time rhythm per my "internal clock". Single front flash.

The "internal clock" was my method for single drops. This fancy set up makes me feel like I'm cheating!
