I visited there once. Beautiful place. Love the colors. It was so dry in the Midwest that the bright colors are not appearing this year.

We are in Sikeston, MO. Just about the northern most area that grows cotton. Never see any if you go north 10 miles. We picked cotton by hand too. You probably remember cotton vacations from school, although it was no vacation.....

What memories. I lived in Southeast Missouri and picked cotton by hand until I was 16 years old. Had a chance to go to a trade school and learn a trade and left the cotton fields in 1943. That was one hard way to earn a little money.

We are surrounded by cotton fields. Don't have to go far to find one. They are beautiful right now but they are being picked fast. Even picking at night.

This is for those who do not live in cotton country or have never seen a cotton field. I love this time of year. The first photo is a picture of some of my siblings in my childhood when cotton was picked by hand. My how times has changed. The other photos I took today showing the new equipment. It picks the cotton from the stalk and when enough is in the machine it forms it into a roll, wraps it in plastic and dumps it out and later a machine will gather the big rolls and haul it to the cotton gins. I love watching it.

Yes it did. It was all swamp land back then.

I think they estimated it was like a 7.4 but the shaking lasted for over a year and this being swampy area it wasn't good. Also they say it changed the flow of the Mississippi to flow backwards during that time.

They didn't have a Richter Scale in 1881. It would be interesting knowing how strong it was? Nice set of photos. I liked reading photo #6. Informative. If you want rain come to

Oregon. Rainy season began this weekend.

Aren't you afraid of posting photos of cotton.

Nope, my daddy was a sharecropper and I grew up in the cotton fields, but don't think we were white slaves....lol I think it's funny when people think only blacks picked cotton. Some of the best memories I have.

Mississippi River at New Madrid, MO., site of the 1811 - 1812 historic earthquake. The river is low as well as all the streams around here. Need some rain.

Actually these were taken really near Mingo at Duck Creek. We frequent Mingo often. Usually we visit Mingo and Duck Creek the same day but it was running late that day and we spent too much time at Duck Creek. We always enter photos in their yearly photo contest and have placed a few times. Mingo is a beautiful place to spend the day. We also like Otter Slough near Dexter, Big Lake near Charleston and 10 Mile Pond south of Charleston. Almost time for eagles to return and soon snow geese which is a breathtaking sight when they come in to land.

We go to the same conservation areas often but always find a new subject to photograph every time. The lightning photo was accidental... but I love it. First one I ever caught.

One winter after our first sizeable snow, we were riding around town and decided to take photos of snowmen kids had built. One house had a neat one so we stopped in the street and took a picture of it. We went on and the guy who lives there got in his car and chased us down. We pulled over and he drove up beside us and asked why we were taking a picture of his house.... Told him we were photographing snowmen. He looked mad but went on. Gee, wonder what he was hiding.
