Cotton Harvest

This is for those who do not live in cotton country or have never seen a cotton field. I love this time of year. The first photo is a picture of some of my siblings in my childhood when cotton was picked by hand. My how times has changed. The other photos I took today showing the new equipment. It picks the cotton from the stalk and when enough is in the machine it forms it into a roll, wraps it in plastic and dumps it out and later a machine will gather the big rolls and haul it to the cotton gins. I love watching it.

What memories. I lived in Southeast Missouri and picked cotton by hand until I was 16 years old. Had a chance to go to a trade school and learn a trade and left the cotton fields in 1943. That was one hard way to earn a little money.

Excellent and educational series! In Southern Georgia I've noticed that there are bits of cotton all along the side of the road this time of year.

We are surrounded by cotton fields. Don't have to go far to find one. They are beautiful right now but they are being picked fast. Even picking at night.

We are in Sikeston, MO. Just about the northern most area that grows cotton. Never see any if you go north 10 miles. We picked cotton by hand too. You probably remember cotton vacations from school, although it was no vacation.....

Excellent pictures. We live a few miles from the cotton fields in Pima County, AZ. It is interesting to watch the cotton grow from tiny shoots to big sturdy plants and then into a field of white in fall. It's about picking time out here and the farmers have switched from the big rectangular bales to the rolled ones covered with plastic. Quite a change from hand picking, bleeding fingers and back breaking days.

Very interesting. I guess cotton is now back on the accepted list.
