My aftermarket grip for the 5200 works fine but you still have to use the Nikon batteries as the 3rd party batteries are not recognized by the camera. (If you have installed your firmware updates)

I have the D5200 and upgraded to the 7100 mainly for the control of the Bulb setting for images of lightning. The 5200 did not allow total control of the ability to keep shutter open for extended periods beyond the default settings

I have a 17-55 2.8 and assorted "kit" lenses. Would buying the 24-70 be a redundant lens or should I look for the 300 sizes.
