My first experience with a DLSR, Nikon 7100. Previous camera was XD-11. Any critique welcome. (my nephew)

Minolta XD-11? one of the finest film SLRs developed by Minolta. I have three of them.
The XD-11 was the predecessor to the Joint Collaboration of Minolta with Leica for the Leica R SLR. Successful project and one of three or four that Leica and Minolta partnered on in the 70's.
Are you still shooting film for Quality?

Heavy shadows like that are always a problem during bright daylight hours. Try turning on your Active D Lighting to medium during these shooting situations and it will bring out more of the detail in the shadowed areas.
