When did you get it?

A) A few days ago.

When you set up your new MBP, did you port everything over from your old Mac using Mac Migration Assistant, or did you do a clean installation of all software and then copy over your data? The latter process is a lot more labor intensive, but ensures you get rid of maximum crap build-up from the old system.

A) I copied all my images over to new computer and I'm creating a new index. I did it the hard way.

It is not your computer that is slow, it is the data transfer rate between your computer and whatever device from which you are importing it.

Get back with us after you get everything imported and sorted.

It doesn’t matter if you have an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Filling it with a garden hose is going to take a while.

When finished filling it, it is a marvel to behold.

While filling (loading) it, not so much.

EVERYTHING is internal to the computer. Data is transferring on the internal BUSS. There is no USB, firewire, or any bottle next like that. It's easy to include some wrong subject images when looking over tens of thousands of images at the same time. LR is good at letting you recover from such errors. I'm learning.

I may have discovered my problem? When I store my images I put them in a tree structure on my SSD, Year, Month, day. I was looking a full years of photographs (well over 5000 images including a lot of raw files.). Now I doing a month at a times. It still grinding away.

I select generic wide reaching search terms first like "hummingbird, Scotland, France, Texas trip, etc. Later I can get more specific.

Edit:
I just imported 1160 hummingbird photos at one time. Some other types of photo also got moved into LR with them. I just removed them form LR but the are still on the SSD. LR is forgiving if you are careful.

I have the version LrC that takes advantage of the M1 chip. I went all out and bought 8TB of SSM, etc.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it not fast! I made the decision to move my photos into the new computer independent of LR. I thought this would be an opportunity to get rid of a lot of junk and broken links.

I thought because everything was in solid state memory that it would be blinding fast. Not so! Importing selected image into LR is painfully slow! Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I select hundreds of photos at a time and give the a broad title like "Scotland Vacation." It's very slow. I turned off my Time Machine back up SW be cause I thought maybe that was slowing me down. Still slow......

Once you have the LRCAT, the next issue may be the path names to the files. So if those are changed, you just have to find the highest 'path' in the folder structure and update inside LR. The change should cascade down.

Say your pictures were in something like: \red-drive\picture\so-forth

But now, you've renamed the drive and / or folder to \new-SSM\pictures\so-forth

You just 'find parent' within the folder display inside the correct LRCAT with LR open, then right-click that old name (\red-drive) and select "update folder location". With the "new-SSM" attached to the computer, just navigate within the OS window and 'point' LRc to that folder. If all your image files where 'missing', this update will cascade through the LR library correcting all the missing images.

If in this example "\red-drive" remains unchanged and available to the new computer, installing and opening the LRCAT should make everything 'as is' on the new computer.

I wish I had listened to you, but now I'm in the process recreating the data base to find my photos. I had a lot junk and duplication in my photos that I'm cleaning up. This will take a long time but now I'm committed to this time consuming path.

I just got off the phone with Adobe tech help (India) and they helped me install the M1 version of LrC and Ps. Everything is going remarkable fast now in terms of computer speed!

Thank you for your help.

It can take a long time the first time. After the first backup, if you change to sync, then it will be quicker and keep everything in sync with the main drive.

Thank you. I'll look into that "sync" thing. Time Machine reports that it will be done in 53 more minutes.

It took a long time (several hours) to move my images from a backup HD that was attached to my new MacBook Pro computer. Now using Time Machine over my wireless LAN to back to a RAID HD. This looks like this is going to take days!

Be sure you get a cable for that drive that's as fast as the components on either end. I moved to an M1 Mac Mini recently and bought a 1TB external SSD to use as the Photo drive. As I recall, there was a lot of variability in the actual throughput of the connector cables available out there - just because they have USB-C ends doesn't necessarily mean they're gonna be fast. You have to look a the fine print to be sure what you're actually ordering..

Thank you for the warning. I'll buy my cable at the Apple Store. I had no idea that cables could vary in speed! I have been thinking of driving into the Apple store anyway to get some help. So far I have not been able to get my iCloud working. I need to get that working to get the latest versions of LrC, PS, DxO, Topaz, Etc.

I'm working with an old Intel version of LrC and it's very snappy. When I get the M1 chip version it will be even faster!

Edit:

I just noticed that the external SSD that I ordered comes with two cables. One is USB-A and the other is USB-C.
I ordered the 2TB version of the SSD.

Rebuild? Why?

If your catalog was 'good' on the old machine, it will be the same way when copied over and onto the new machine. Your time is your time, but there's no reason to rebuild something that simply needs to be copied from one machine to another.

But it was NOT good! There were a lot errors caused by me.

So where do you stand on the migration process? From that list of all / multiple LRCAT files, if you update the display to show the details and then sort by modified date, the newest file (probably / possibly the v11) should be the LRCAT to migrate to the new computer. Taking that single file would seem to be the only needed step rather than starting over.

The migration process is going slow! There are a few photo where I can't remember exactly where I was when I took them. I still think it's better to re-construct LRCAT file because my old ones had some bad errors.

It took me to catch on to LR and I made some stupid mistakes. I'm retired and this will keep me amused on some cold winter nights. Now I know to only modify LR photo from within LR! I screwed my old LRCAT files up in the past.

I used a time machine copy of all my imaged and copied ALL my old LR photos over over to my new computer. The date that the images were saved because of the way save my data. My memory is still good enough that I can tell by looking at the photo where and who. It will take me a longe time to recreate all new key search terms/words, but the result with be worth it.

I noticed that if I assigned a "star" rating to a photo, that rating, was preserved.

Some of the photos was taken with an old film camera and later scanned and digitized. The meta-data was lost long ago. For the other photos where I still have the Raw images, the meta data is preserved in the image file.

I'm attaching an old photo taken with a Konica film camera and a 57mm f/1.2 lens. I know that because that is still my favorite lens, and I have owned many. I could not take a bad photo with lens!
