After I posted a question about duplex printing, several people recommended a laser printer. Looking at reviews on "The Wire Cutter," I saw this opening statement.

"Printers are annoying. All of them."

Excellent! Printers seem to have minds of their own, but they are not very good minds.

The Wire Cutter recommendation for a budget laser is the Brother HL-L2350DW, $123 at Amazon. Amazon has none, but B&H has it for $149 with no sales tax. Do any of you have that printer? I'll read some reviews.

In case you haven't realize this yet, reviews on Amazon are a waste of time, especially the bad reviews. People complain because a certain printer came with a CD, or the box was damaged, or a non-wireless printer can't print wirelessly. I prefer watching YouTube reviews done by people who review electronics all the time.

EDIT: Very good reviews. I'm ordering it tomorrow from B&H. The toner cost difference is amazing, though - $70 for Brother, and $10 for generic. I'll play it safe and get the Brother.

I have 2 Brother laser printers. One is 4 years old and is print only (low end). The 2nd printer is a print and copy only (also low end). Both these printers are wireless. I have 24 years of owning various makes and price range of printers and these 2 printers are the most trouble free by far. For my needs I will probably never go back to ink printers. Incidentally I use a generic toner that costs me about $30 that I buy from my local printer repair/sales store. They get the ink from a large LA. and have never had any toner problems. I get my toner from a local Palm Springs printer repair/sale store that gets the toner from a large dealer in LA. Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

Dealing with large companies such as this story has become such a nightmare . . . and it seems that nothing can be done about it. Perhaps if all of us customers complained by letter they would sit up and "notice".

We have an awful electric company here - Central Hudson. People get bills for several thousand dollars, rather than $100. Those with AutoPay get into a real mess.

My last payment for electricity was in August. I no longer get paper bills or email notices, so I have to go to their website and pay online. I've been paying since August, but they never give me credit. At least they don't charge my CC or checking account. I'm always "Past Due," though. Right now, I owe for September, October, and November. I'm going to phone them this morning, but from what I've heard, that means being "on hold" indefinitely. To make things worse, it's Monday.

The County and State have been investigating the company and denying it rate increases, but they still can't operate correctly.

Well, yes and no. Looking at the statistics from BackBlaze, they are reliable, but SSDs seem to have the overall edge. SSDs do wear out after a certain number of writes, though. An HDD will keep working unless something breaks. As I said above, I am using some that are ten years old.

What should one look for to know if you have a failed backup drive?

How did an upstart like Amazon manage to create such an apparently efficient system in such a short time?

At my age (89)I feel that I'm entitled to an occasional unintended typo. As a retired printer who worked for a major newspaper all of his life no one is bothered more by many typos than I am . . . but please folks . . . "give me a break".

Can a horse dentist do work on humans? I'm still in shock at the prices my local dentists want for me.

I've had a love affair with Citroen since mid last century. Mostly the DS21 Pallas of 1950, 1960 and 1970 vintage. It has been called by many highly qualified engineers the "car of the century" for the very advanced engineering that went in to it at that time. If it was not for scarcity of parts and mechanics that know how to repair it . . . I would be driving one now.

The Delage, Delahaye, Talbot-Lago (all French) and the lone Italian Bugatti always grab my attention. I consider them among the most beautiful autos ever made. Just look at that,Tom...the Gina Lollabrigida (in her heyday) of automobiles. Beautiful captures.

Don't forget to mention Citroen (also French) in that group. I believe that in cars beautiful function equals beautiful car!
