I've got news for you- it's been sold and moved to Arizona.

No, that was 'London Bridge'.
It was dismantled and (partially) reconstructed in Lake Havasu, AZ.
Now that I'm a 'full time' photographer (I just retired from my civil service job), I'll finally have time to go up there and make some images of it.

I agree. Having Norton or McAfee on your computer is just like having a virus.

That's why major corporations use them.

Right! So the IT departments have all the control, not the user.
I'd rather have something I control, like Spybot and AVG, and not have that bloat-ware of either Norton or McAfee.
And, don't forget a good firewall like ZoneAlarm.

Think you'd get more bang for the buck with the Google Nik Collection. At $149 Topaz can't touch it.. I have both the Nik Collection and Topaz Adjust and Detail. I rarely use the Topaz plugins, most likely because I found that the Nik Collection more comprehensive. I also prefer the Nik interface.
Alien Skin and Auto FX also have some nice, helpful plugins. Again, more expensive but worth a trial.
IMHO stay away from OnOne software. Trashy interface, totally redundant.

Don't overlook the onOne 'Perfect' Suite.

I actually have to open the EOS utility, then it will start downloading; but with my previous Windows XP, all I did was plug in the camera, and the download started automatically.

What you have to do is set a default action in Windows, NOT the EOS utility.
When I plug my memory card in, I get a pop-up asking what to do with the files. It has a tick box to make that setting the default action.

As of this update,
Highway 67 from US 89A at Jacob Lake to the North Rim has closed for the winter.
Highway 67 is scheduled to reopen on May 15, 2014.

But that's not the road to Page. That's the access road to the North Rim.
The road I was talking about, and thought was being discussed, is Hwy 89, which had a collapse a little over a year ago. They haven't fixed it yet, but there's a detour on Navajo20.

I agree, copy the files over using Windows Explorer, then import them into ViewNX2 or LR5. I believe ViewNX2 will apply all the camera post processing instructions if you wish (unless only CaptureNX2 does).

Either ViewNX2 or LightRoom can do the download of his RAW files, AND make an immediate backup.

I have a slightly different workflow.
I use an older program, Nikon Transfer, to download my images, and make the backup.
Then, I start LR with a new catalog for each project/client.
I see no need for LR to keep track of each and every image I have.

romanticf16 great advice. I did defeat the process in converting prior to but I have not used the memory card since so I'm going to try the recuva software Goofy recommended. I'll be back... :)

There is also 'Recuva' which a number of members here have used successfully.

Now, as to your workflow.
Not only should you NOT be having NX2 convert your images, it should also be making a concurrent backup of the files from your cards. I do that to an external drive.
LightRoom is where you should be doing the JPEG conversion, and then ONLY after you edit them.

If your concerned about how much space you're using, remember this:
Memory is cheap! Buy more memory!
I just paid $69 for a 1TB portable drive.

The road north to Page was closed in January...it looked like for some time. You'd have to come around from the northwest if it still is. The road to the north rim was also closed when we went by although there wasn't a huge amount of snow. If either of those is on your agenda you need to be sure to check on road conditions. You only find out when you hit the closures and then you have hundreds of miles to detour. There aren't many roads in that country.

But you can easily get to the south rim from Las Vegas.
The road north to Page was closed in January...it ... (show quote)

The road to Page has a bypass through the reservation, around the area that collapsed. So, you can still get there from the south, it just takes 45-60 minutes longer than previously.

We've been to the South Rim a fair number of times. We've done it as a day trip out of Phoenix. For Valentine's day a couple of years ago, we stayed overnight in Williams, then took the train. It had snowed overnight and they were still clearing the walkways when we got up there. It was magnificent. Another time, we stayed over at the Maswik lodge and we walked along the rim after dinner. It was an almost full moon. Words can't describe it.
It's different every time you go.

You undoubtedly have a pension from a "Defined Benefit" plan, which are increasingly becoming liable to default (look at Detroit's civil plans)... I would still worry if I were you if the economy starts tanking again...

My 'plan' is backed by the full faith and credit of a state.
Haven't seen one of those go bankrupt. Yet.

Okay here it is.

Looking at the histogram for this image (you can see it in Picasa, too), you've got areas that are blown out highlights, AND loss of detail in some shadow area. Your exposure got killed at both extremes.

Can I ask a question?? Why do some of you have such an issue with resizing your photos before they are posted?? I understand wanting the original saved for pixel peeping, but when YOU do the resizing and don't allow the forum to do it for you, you have more control over the final result. So, and I'm not trying to be a smartie pants here, I'm just trying to understand. Why is it such a bad thing to resize your own photo??

By reducing the resolution to get the file to a size acceptable to UHH, you reduce a lot of the detail.
So....It's NOT a bad thing to do your own downsizing, if you aren't asking for C&C on the image.

I have a silly question. When I am finished with editing my photos and send an attachments say to the Ugly Hedgedog, the clarity and sharpness are not what I had edited. It's lost somewhere along the line.
Looking for suggestions, thoughts. The pic I am sending is clear as a bell.

Try ticking the "(store original)" box. That will allow us to look at the original file, not just the one that has been compressed/downsized to fit the forum.

The medium you put the pictures on has no bearing on the pictures or their quality. These days, the USB flash drive is the better option, since almost any device which can view images on a CD drive will also have a USB port, but not the other way around.

Correct. Some of the newer Mac's don't have an optical (CD/DVD) drive. And no tablet does.
