Retrieving RAW files after it has been converted to JPEG

I am a bit new to the digital world and I have a question for the group. I recently shot a batch of pics in RAW. I have a Nikon so its in NEF. I used Nikons View NX2 program for transferring them to my computer and converting them to JPEG using LR5 to show them online.

Everything worked fine, and I formatted the memory card. Then a friend wanted one of the photos put on canvas for a gift so I checked Costco's canvas print recommended resolutions, and for the size this customer wants the JPEG resolution isn't big enough. I went to retrieve the NEF file to use the larger resolution image and I cant find the NEF file. It no longer appears in the batch of photos I uploaded from my cam and the pics are now deleted from the memory card. Do I do something wrong and how can I get the NEF file back, or can I? Rich

Never overwrite the original!

Didn't intend to. I made the apparent wrong assumption that even though I made the conversion, there would remain a copy of the original file. So once you convert from RAW to JPEG, the original is lost?

They should still be on your computer, and LR5 should be able to find them, since they should still be in the catalog. I don't use the LR catalog system well enough to know what you likely did. But the original nef should not be lost, your assumption was correct.

Have you taken pictures on the card since then?

Did you do a computer-wide search for *.nef files in Windows Explorer?

I don't think raw files are "overwritten."

Ok, if Linda's suggestion does not find it, then you might still be able to retrieve it from the card. Search for recovery software here, I haven't used any in years, but others have.

Try this free software
http://m.en.softonic.com/app/recuva
It has been recommended several times here.
I use the software that comes with the more expensive Lexar and Sandisk memory cards.

Thing is I converted the images from this memory card from NEF to JPEG prior to importing them onto LR5. Yes I did a search, and most of the photos from that specific memory card are there, just not the one I'm looking for, and there are about 15 in the numeric series that are missing.

IF you set up Lightroom properly you could import your RAW NEF file into Lightroom, where you have the option to convert it to a DNG RAW or just store the original OR BOTH. Lightroom then works with "proxy" images for all your editing until you Export, at which time you select TIFF or jpeg, select resolution and sharpening. Lightroom then copies your RAW image and applies your changes to it before converting it as you have selected. You defeated this entire process by converting from NEF RAW to jpeg before importing into Lightroom, so there is NO saved RAW file in Lightroom. IF you have not used your memory card since downloading it you can download software to recover your original RAW images. If you have used it, you may have overwritten the RAW files, in which case they are lost.

ViewNX2 does not delete the nef files, so something else went wrong.

romanticf16 great advice. I did defeat the process in converting prior to but I have not used the memory card since so I'm going to try the recuva software Goofy recommended. I'll be back... :)

Richard:

For future reference, there's no reason to convert RAW into jpeg when importing into LR. Use LR to import, keep and catalog the RAW files, then export jpegs after you've done all your pp.

If you haven't used that memory card since, the original files should be retrievable.
