Thanks Searcher. I knew the Oracle of LR would have the answer. (Much more reliable than Adobe.) I had a fear that all my work would be lost. Thanks for the confidence builder.

I recently lost my hard drive. Fortunately everything was backed up (at least recoverable). Here is my dilemma: I am adding a second internal HD exclusively for photos which makes a big change to my directory tree. How should I proceed to get all my photos back into the LR catalog and recover the old .lrcat that contains all my editing information?
After re-installing LR, can I open the most recent saved catalog and have LR relocate the image files? I am not too concerned about the process of re-linking the photos back into LR, but I definitely do not want to lose all my Develop work. By default, where does LR keep the develop metadata? Is it in the lrcat or a sidecar? (I have never seen an xmp file on my system.)
My images are mostly dng and jpg with some cr2 and rw2.
I'm running a PC with Win8.1. The only thing I can find on Adobe's website is re-installing in safe mode in Vista.

I doubt you have to worry about camera thieves in Paris walking around with that fire-scorched puppy!

Has anyone considered traveling with this monster? It exceeds all size and weight limits for airline carryon luggage. That leaves checking it as a second bag (gulp-got good insurance?) or buying a second seat a la travelling with a cello.

Don't worry about gyro action, they use them in aircraft all the time with no problems. You need a lot of mass to have significant gyroscopic action.

Good point, but I doubt HD's used in commercial aircraft are consumer quality. Probably approaching hardened MIL SPEC standards. At 3x-4x consumer pricing?

In the narrow and specific case of just wanting to darken the blue sky, would tweaking in CS6 be better than a polarizer lens?

You might want to take a look at this video. He discusses the advantages of using PS instead of a CPL for blue skies - and how to do it. ('Course CPL's do have their place ...)

Just remember, you do not want to move an external hard drive while the disc is still spinning. Gyroscopic action can exert a large force on the bearings which they are not designed for. Wait for the disc to stop. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyroscope for an explanation.

Earlier this year Backblaze Online Backup wrote an article about their experience with HDD's. With nearly 30,000 units, they have a pretty good sample. Read the article and come to your own conclusions. It depends on what your needs and usage patterns are.

The new self-stayed section of the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge.
They had not yet begun to remove the old bridge. It should be quite a sight when the clutter is gone.

Set yourself an annual budget concerning expenses on gear, and stick to it, no matter how many exciting new goodies you see!

Spend less time browsing catalogs and reading latest gear news and reviews, and more time using your camera with the stuff you already have.

If you subscribed to emails introducing you to all the latest gear deals - unsubscribe now! That's like a junkie trying to kick the habit but is sharing residence with a pusher. Just makes it that much harder to say no and quit for good.

Excellent advice. Follow that regimen for a year. Then take a year comparing, analyzing and prioritizing equipment. Then you will have two years! of savings to upgrade your kit with the perfect item.
Follow that with another year of silence. Then a year of analysis.
Worked great for me. At least until I fell off the wagon at two months! <grin>

I think someone at Adobe messed up their calculations. The download site says a T1 line will take over an hour! I just downloaded at 11mbps and it took about 14 minutes. But, yeah, these are big files. LR updates include the whole program and the final step in installation it deletes the old program but leaves the desktop "link-to-nowhere".

I got the notice and went to the download page. It showed the new download as 900+ MB, requiring over 5 hours at DSL speed.

I don't recall past updates being so humongous.

Did they screw something up?

You get it for that price or even less on Ebay every day, just remember its a grey market camera and you will get no Canon USA warranty cards nor a valid bill of sale, so no USA based warranty service available. (Maybe "store" warranties, which usually are totally worthless.)

U R right. Missed that "...warranty by seller."
