On a related note, I have been seeing/reading a lot about back button focus lately and I believe in it and want to try it, but... I can't figure out a way to make it work with my camera. Any ideas?

Thanks for taking time to read, and extra points to anyone who can offer suggestions that work![/quote]

On my Lumix ZS40 I can set the fn button to AE/AF Lock as I come off auto focus. The focus stays locked until I press the fn button again.
I 'always' shoot in spot focus, AF Continuous.)

Photoshop CC Bridge now has pages and pages of image and camera data, including a folder for EXIF. However, I cannot find the camera shutter release count or any other label that may be masquerading as such. ???

I wish I had posted a more intelligent question!
I 'always' shoot BBF, spot metering, continuous focus, which is claimed to lock the focus when you release the button.
Now what should I believe? (I could write a book on "Gullible's Travels".)

Usually, not always, but usually, if there is something wrong with a refurbished or new, it's going to happen sometime soon, well within the 90 days. That said, one never knows. Nikon, like Canon and Sony, make good stuff. Usually not a problem. Refurbished cameras are interesting, many on this site have the unrealistic view that these cameras have been comprehensively inspected by a team of experts, nothing could be further from the truth. Most refurbished have been returned by folks who just did not like them, or, have had a small glitch. That glitch has been repaired by a technician, could be an experienced technician, could be a guy on his first day, any way, the point is they fix the APPERANT problem. They do a check to see if the camera is within SPECS. They DO NOT do a comprehensive check, that costs money, but they do make sure the camera is operating within guidelines. SO, like I said, these refurbished cameras are a good value and should operate as new, if they do not, they are going to do so within the 90 day period, and most camera manufactures, if these refurbished cameras need service, will take care of you. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

The entire comment applies equally to anew purchase. The only difference in the risk factor is the shorter warranty.

Only buy from the Nikon website.

With respect, Mike, that is an interesting comment but terrible advice that does a disservice to the many exemplary dealers and individuals on this list. Some may take insult even if not intended.

If what you are really interested in is a "shakedown" then you should make a list of the features that are important and master and test them all in the first couple of months. This would involve reading the manual almost cover to cover and jotting down interesting features that you want to test. It would be a great learning experience. Or there is the extended warranty option.

Great response! First priority: actually perform the functions on your check list. Then check features you do not intend to use for now: video, interval shooting, multiple exposure, BIF, BBF, ???

It'll lower your risk and serve the learning curve.
(It will really help if you can enlist a friend who has experience with your new model to ride shotgun.)

Yes, no problem. BUT remember that not only does the crop factor apply to the effective focal length of the FX lens mointed on a DX body, but so too does the aperture. e,g., an F2.8 FX lens mounted on a DX body has an effective aperture of f4.0. A 20mm F2.8 prime FX lens performs as a 30mm f4.0 on a DX body.

Why do you all assume that I had no experience with the camera? Actually I had used the camera for several months before my trip. I knew it had some limitations and would not perform like a dslr. It was a trade-off.

Because I was looking for candid shots, I used the auto setting. I am not a novice and publish multiple photos in an all color monthly magazine.

The point I was trying to make was that next time I will take and use the best camera and lenses that I have, thereby increasing the likelihood (but not guaranteeing) that I will be satisfied with my results.

If you believe that the zs50 is able to capture the same range of subjects under varying conditions as an 80d, you are entitled to your opinion, but I doubt many would agree with you.

Hold on there! I thought you were unfamiliar with your camera because of your OP.
If you were already familiar with your camera, why didn't you understand its capabilities and limitations before you ever left home?

Who made ANY comparison or claims comparing it to any DSL? Especially when shooting in AUTO?

The fact that you said you were shooting in auto rather than in iA confirms that you were very uninformed about your camera.
