Can anyone tell me their experiences of using a full frame lens on a DX body. I'm thinking of trading up to a full frame camera soon and have been offered the gift of a full frame lens which I have been thinking of using on my current 3100 until I purchase the new camera body. Thanks

I bought a couple of DX lenses when I purchased my D7000 years ago. They worked fine for what I was doing at the time but after some research I knew I would eventually move up to a full frame camera and started buying FX lenses. They worked wonderfully with the 7000 and when I moved up to the D750 I was ready with FX lenses. One advantage is that FX lenses work on crop sensor cameras but DX lenses don't work well with full frame cameras. Some full frame cameras have a way of changing settings to allow you to use the DX but why do that if you don't have to?! Just my personal opinion!

If you like the lens and are going to up grade to FX, take advantage.

Check your user’s manual (Compatible Lenses) to see what functions you’ll have with that FX lens.

Use my 28-300 and 200-500 on my D5300 all the time. Work great.

Do it all the time but with D7xxx, D300s, and D500 not a problem. Check your owner manual to be sure

The only downsides are weight, size and cost. The big upsides are you are using the center of the lens which is sharper and with fewer aberrations, providing a more uniform image quality across the frame, and as you pointed out, you will be ready when you get a full frame camera. I used a combination of DX and FX lenses on my DX cameras - I like to shoot birds and the longest DX lens seems to be very slow 70-300 F5.6 lenses with "modest" image quality.

I have DX and FX lenses that I use on my D7000 and D500.

Make sure the lens you're getting is the AF-S type. Your D3100 doesn't have a built-in focusing motor.

"...the gift of a full frame lens..." You know what they say about a gift horse.

No problem!

It's probably best to match DX with DX, etc., but don't sweat it.

Yes, no problem. BUT remember that not only does the crop factor apply to the effective focal length of the FX lens mointed on a DX body, but so too does the aperture. e,g., an F2.8 FX lens mounted on a DX body has an effective aperture of f4.0. A 20mm F2.8 prime FX lens performs as a 30mm f4.0 on a DX body.

A 20mm f/2.8 fixed focal length lens performs as a 20mm f/2.8 lens on a DX body just as it does on a full frame body. Neither the focal length nor the aperture is changed by the size of the sensor. Some of the effects, such as field of view and needed magnification do change, but keep a clear picture of what and why.

I bought a D70s many years ago and a Sigma zoom lens. I was not happy with the IQ and sold it to acquire a Nikon DX lens. The 16-85mm. It was OK, but the variable aperture bothered me, so I started buying only excellent Nikon FX lenses. My first was the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D. Many of the lenses I bought were AF (which will not autofocus on 3xxx or D5xxx bodies since they do not have a built in auto focus motor). I later traded in the D70s for a D300 and used only FX glass. Eventually bought a D700 and then traded it for the current D810. Very happy with my lens decision years ago.

I use a sigma 150-600C which I am told is a full frame lens on my d7200 and it works great. In fact may better on a crop sensor body as you only see/use the sweet center portions lens.
