Hi all. I am about to purchase another camera and would like to get some feedback. The path is clear, if I get new, but I am considering buying refurbished and spend the extra saved towards a lens. If I buy a Nikon refurbished camera, and since it only comes with a 90 day warranty, given that the 7200 has lots of bells and whistles, (some, like video, I may never or rarely use) what protocol can I subject the camera to that might be more likely to show me a problem? I know it seems like I'm asking you to use your crystal ball, I am just nervous about buying a camera with only 90 days. Has anyone had a problem with refurbished cameras from Nikon? I apologize I am not more clear, but I hope you all understand my concern. I don't want to be penny wise, pound foolish. Thanks in advance.
Bernie

Why not lower the risk, and buy the Nikon extended warranty with some of the savings?

B&H Photo was selling refurbished D7200 cameras for $789. But it appears that offer is over. I have not heard of Nikon selling extended warranty on refurbished. The extended warranty would must likely come from the camera shop that sells the camera, not Nikon USA. I would suggest you check Adorama, or Cameta Photo for availability. And don't fall prey to ridiculously lower prices like 42nd Street Photo. They are most likely gray market, and if your camera needs repair, you are SOL. Good luck.

I've bought refurbs (OEM refurbs, Nikon D610 & Olympus Pen OMD EM-10) from Cameta with no issues. Most times, if an issue is going to surface, it will happen within that 90 day period.

If what you are really interested in is a "shakedown" then you should make a list of the features that are important and master and test them all in the first couple of months. This would involve reading the manual almost cover to cover and jotting down interesting features that you want to test. It would be a great learning experience. Or there is the extended warranty option.

Gear that has been refurbished by the manufacturer has, in effect, been thru the process twice and is much less likely to have major issues. Such gear is often handed off to responsible vendors to be sold. The vendors and the manufacturer are very conscious of their respective reputations and will make a strong effort to ensure your satusfaction. I have made such purchases several times and never experienced a problem.

My philosophy is just buy it new with the full warranty. Lenses, on the other hand, I'm comfortable buying used when I can lay hands on them to test before buying. Lots of folks buy factory refurb cameras with no problems and I'm not knocking it, I'm just not comfortable doing it...

Years ago, I bought a refurbished D3200, the focus was off and it underexposed ~1 stop. Two days at a local Nikon authorized shop and everything was perfect. Correctional charts were even included. Many functions are included in chips or IC's and seldom malfunction; most malfunctions seem to be mechanical and become evident quickly, allowing sufficient under the 90 day warranty.

I Have bought several refurbished items from main manufacturers, and in most cases, they are better than new, because they are fully inspected by a technician; new items are only inspected on a batch basis, `ie possibly 1 in a hundred.

I buy refurb from Cameta and they give a year warranty. Most refurb are about the same price from the ABC stores, some throw in extra stuff. Cameta has the best warranty.

I agree with MichaelH. You can most likely download the manual at the Nikon web site before the purchase & test the features you will use most when you receive the camera.if your worried.
I was thinking of purchasing a D7100 refurbished a little over a year ago direct from Nikon with only 400 something on the shutter count & decided to think on it overnight. Called the next morning. = gone! Its not like new , they might only have 1 or a few.
