No digital picture is viewable without a program to interpret it. It's just a bunch of 1's and 0's And the Jpeg throws out a bunch of them. Isn't that what I said? The Jpeg is not a negative. What I said was in an, abridged fashion. Jpeg is not a negative. Can anybody read anymore?

I don't think so. A RAW file is anything but latent. It's there and no developing required. Jpeg is the output from the RAW file. Just like a picture is like the output from a negative.. There is no real photographer, computer person, image processor that would agree with the statement Jpeg is the negative.

When you have a dark shot like this one it will be noisy. Noise is in the shadows. Doesn't make a hoot as to which brand you use.

You wont lose anything just by opening a Jpg file. It's when you copy it is when you start to lose. If your messing with a Jpeg just don't save the original, save a copy. That way the original will remain just that. Or you could change it to a Tiff format, which will lose hardly anything.

Capn Dave, I have a Canon T3i, I'll have to look to see if I can set it for just RAW or not, I switched it to RAW playing around with all the settings trying to learn this thing and it automatically saved two pictures every time. Im an old film guy and the RAW thing had me a little confused.

Ok AmericanRebel I happen to know the T3i. In the menu section under Quality push the set button To select Raw or Jpeg turn the dial. To select the number of megapixels use the left right toggle button. If you don't want to shoot Either the Raw or Jpeg The first thing in the megapixel menu is a dash - this means no selection. So if you want to just shoot in Raw there should be the quality highlighted in the Raw menu and in the Jpeg menu there should be a Dash -

American Rebel I am not sure what camera you have, but I did notice you said when you shoot RAW you get 2 pictures a RAW and a Jpeg. I think your camera might have a selection in the menu that will allow to do one or the other. Look closely at the menu and check when you select RAW Jpeg is deselected.

Oh and while we are on the subject that you only get snapshot quality or Jpeg is only good for snapshots, I shoot Jpeg. I do it for a living.
Got everybody's attention didn't I. At times I shoot sporting events and the people want their shots ASAP. I set my camera up at that time to shoot Jpeg. It fast down and dirty, you got to get the shots out minutes after the game. There is no time to mess with RAW. The rest of the time I shoot RAW

Thanks. Wally was easy because he lives at the National Center for Birds of Prey and they were flying him from one person to another. He works for food. I knew right where to stand and even had multiple tries at it.

Getting wild birds like that is much more challenging.

You got that right. It's still a great capture. I doesn't look unnatural

Just a quick note If you have an older Lightroom or your Photoshop version is no older than CS3. You can get the latest Photoshop CC and Lightroom for $10.00 a month. That is an awesome deal. This is not an introductory deal either it is permanent

She said it's fixed.
Never used canned air in or around your sensor. There is stuff in that can of air. Not chunky stuff I am saying it is not compressed air. There are chemicals add to it because people have been known to inhale the stuff because of the stuff they use to pressurize the can.

Bottom line your camera exposure settings do matter. The key word EXPOSURE. The Focus does matter. These 2 things effect the sensor and how much light it gets and how sharp the image is. That is what is limited to about + - 3 stops in processing. Everything else is just what the little computer adds. Believe it or not Photoshop Lightroom Gimp can tweak the shot to bring it to what your minds eye saw. These can't make up for poor composition, out of focus, piss poor light.
All this stuff combined can make the difference between a snapshot and a great shot
