Took this picture today at 1/200, f8, ISO 400. I know it is underexposed, but was surprised to see the noise at this low of an ISO on this camera. (Still getting used to the Mark) Is this normal? I did fix it in LR, but was just surprised I needed to (except for my exposure). Thanks for any info/input.

I would like to help you with this issue, but the download shows ALL EXIF data has been stripped from the image. The noise is definitely excessive for the Mark 3 and looks a lot more like the original 5D at 800 ISO.

When you have a dark shot like this one it will be noisy. Noise is in the shadows. Doesn't make a hoot as to which brand you use.

Make Sure that your In Camera Sharpening is set at +3 or below. The higher you set the in camera sharpening the more the sharpening enhances the noise.

With low exposures, even on the 5D III at ISO 400, you are going to see some noise. This is very mild and certainly on par with my own 5D III at similar settings. I don't think you are getting anything out of the ordinary here.

Thanks, I was just kind of surprised. It did "fix" pretty easily in LR. So much to learn.......but good to know it is "normal".....

The sharpening setting does not apply to RAW files.....and that is what I shoot. At least that is what I have read in more than one place because I had thought of that. Would love it if I am wrong and it could be set.

Well just out of curiosity what is your In Camera Sharpening set on? From what I've experienced/not read/ it does affect raw files.

My Sharpness is set on 3 which is the default setting. In the manual, these settings are for the "Picture Styles" settings which are "Standard, Faithful, Portrait, Neutral, Landscape, etc. These are JPEG settings. If you are shooting RAW, you are shooting a raw negative and none of those peramiters are applied. All is done through post processing. I did read that if you use Canons DPP or whatever it is called, that it can read a file that has been attached that is called a PF2 file. I don't use canons DPP as it won't read my DNG files. Am still looking for the several articles I read that said the same, but can't see them right this minute. The above info was in a 5D Mark III manual.

Ben Long at Lynda.com is one of the places where I learned this. I just listened again to chapter 9 and the first video of of the "Shooting with the Canon 5D Mark III" where he explained Picture Styles. Picture Styles are for JPEG shooters. Raw files are not affected by these settings. If you use Canon's DPP, and shoot RAW, then these settings can be seen by that specific software. So, if you shoot RAW and use DPP, these Picture Styles will be of benefit to you. If you use other software, these settings are of no value to RAW shooters. Hope this helps.

WOW, I have that camera and do not experience any noise at that level? I'd be interested to see how many people have the same problem with "our" camera?

I thought the 5D3 had similar low light/noise characteristics to the 6D, which is outstanding. I'd be concerned that something is wrong somewhere. I'd send it in to be checked.

You called it right it is not the ISO it is the underexposure that results in noise. The 5Diii has very low noise even at ISO 2400 - if you don't underexpose the image.
