For what it's worth, if you are new to DSLR photography I would first concentrate on getting exposure right with the triangle of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. Switch on the cameras highlights function on playback mode, it will help.

D3400 is entry level, it doesn't support that function.

I have an opportunity to purchase a used Nikon D90. Body and lens. I'm going to look at it next week and because this is a definite upgrade from what I currently own, I'd like to know if anyone has one, what do you like/dislike about it? What should I look for, if anything, that reads 'buyer beware'? I consider it to be a low-level professional camera, am I right? Thanks.

The D90 is a solid camera, granted older technology but, it does take good pictures. Remember it's more about the glass than the body anyway. I purchased one (D90) at a yard sale a year and a half ago for 200.00 and it came with a 50mm f/1.8 attached, an older 8 Gig SD card and a small camera bag, and it only had a 1600+ shutter count on it, a real bargain. I actually considered it an upgrade from the D3300 I'd gotten for father's day the year before due to the additional functionality (like commander mode for off camera flash and an in body lens drive motor etc.)

If it's in good condition you won't regret the purchase, I don't shoot video so it's a non-issue for me that it only supports 720p as it was one of the first dslrs to offer video. The below image was shot with Nikon 60mm f/2.8 micro/macro lens. Good luck and happy shooting to you.

In an act of insanity, I decided to use the walmart gift cards I received for christmas this year and by the Nikon lens I needed A nikon 35mm f1.8 AF-S DX lens. I usualy order my gear directy from Nikon but I got greedy and thought I could save some dough by using my gift cards and pay the remainder on my Visa. The company that Walmarts Marketplace used for most Nikon Gear is Pixibytes out f NY york.

When I opened up the package I found a Accessory kit and not the lens I ordered but a Nikon 35mm f2 D AF-S lens. I called Walmart and I also Called Pixi-bytes. Pixibytes never responded and Considering that they have an F rating by the BBB I was not surprised. Walmart called and said they would fix the problem and I believed them.

On monday morning I called Walmart and told them that Pixibytes did not contact me in any way shape or form. I got real loud and told them to stop trying to send the lens Walmart could never ship me in the first. They simply can do nothing correct.

After running out of time I went to work and called Walmart a third time and asked for my money back. She said I had to talk to a manager in order to get that done. After waiting what seems like forever the anager comes on the line and tell me I have the wrong manager. I had to talk to the Marketplace manager. Now waiting forever and a day The manage of the Marketplace issued me a refund and put the gift card funds back on my gift cards. When I asked them if they were going to issue a call tag to return the wrong lens they shipped me, she simply said. "throw it away, give it Goodwill or just keep it for yourself."

I reordered my lens from Nikon and receicved a $30 discount because now the lens was on sale.

And what did I get for my trouble a brand new 35mm F2.0 AF-S d lens that I absolutely have no use for, 2 gift certificates and $30 off my new lens.

Thank you for shopping at Walmart Online.

P.S. I now a person in the military that purchased a very expensive targeting laser through a diiferent division of Walmart. When he got the package he had ordered he found one extremely expensive toothrush. Yes it is true names have been changed to protect the innocent.

It's actually a very good lens. Why do you have no use for it?

Here are my best attempts without getting out the macro lens and D810 which are cleaned and packed away. I added an additional photo of the front lens element with glare across it to help demonstrate it is clean. If there’s a scratch they become magnified when when viewed through glare.
Thank you again for your inquiry!

Can you show the glass with the aperture wide open from the front and back with light passing through?

Do you have images of the lenses available? I'm interested in the 85mm.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tether my D3400 to a Win10 computer with Elements installed? I see a wirelsss system listed, but it is confusing if one has to go wireless to get the camera tethered or if there is a wired solution.

USB cable from camera to computer/laptop, not sure your software supports tethered shooting or not but Lightroom does as do other programs, Nikon also has software available for tethered shooting, if you need low cost/shareware/freeware option check out Digicam all of which work well with my D3300.

Speaking of the Nikon 300mm f/2.8, check out the MTF graph
at the bottom of the linked page--it's danged near perfect:
https://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/f-mount/singlefocal/Telephoto/af-s_300mmf_28g_ed_vr2/index.htm

And sooooo fast....and contrasty.

But I rarely (if ever) need a lens longer than my old Nikon 200 mm, for the stuff I do.
Oh well.

With a price tag to go with it...

Hello all,

Forgive me if I have overlooked something obvious, but when I read my User's Manual on page 138-139 I do not see how to save an image in the camera that I have zoomed in on and moved the subject a bit to the right or left, using the QUAL button.

Is it possible to save these images or am I limited to just viewing them on my LED screen?

Thanks for your help.

John T.

Not while in camera, limited to just viewing on your LCD screen. You must make your edits in your post processing software and then save your images.

In Lightroom, you have to set the catalog preferences to write changes to xmp. The default state is to only keep edits in the preview database and NOT write them to xmp.

Changes made to a raw file are never set in stone. Exporting an image merely takes a snapshot of your current edits and commits them to a bitmap file. The original edits can still be undone, fine tuned, or you can even make virtual copies and reset the image to it's unedited state to do a different treatment - high-key, split toning, monochrome, etc.

Thanks Gene, thought the sidecars were default. What I meant by set in stone or baked were the resulting exports.

I have a D5500. Would that be considered as a full frame.

No, the D5500 is an APS-C (crop sensor) camera. Compared to a full frame camera yours has a 1.5x crop factor due to the size of the sensor, so when looking at an image from both of these cameras yours in comparison to the full frame would look to be 1.5x tighter, it's not magnification but rather field of view. So when you take a picture with say a 100mm lens on an APS-C crop sensor camera in relation to a full frame image it would look as though you'd used a 150mm lens on the full frame.

I was wondering how people save pieces of work that they are working on and want to go back to in the Develop mode of LightRoom. I realise that the picture etc is still in my library but what ways do people use to find them again. That is, a way to record which picture you are working on etc. I can create a separate collection for work in progress, or write the details down in a notebook - I won't risk my memory! - but I'm sure there are people who have developed systems that work for them that they may be willing to share.

Thank You.

Hi JC,

By default any image you work on gets a small icon placed in the corner of the image, LR saves a sidecar file automatically of the modifications you've made, no need to do a save per say, any time you return to an image and re-enter the develop module your right back to where you left off, nothing is set in stone until you export your file as a .jpg or other format. I hope this helps and good luck with your PP, and keep shooting...
