Hello...I just purchased a Nikon 3400 kit from Amazon.Waiting on the brown truck to deliver next week...Any thoughts or pointers from anyone...I am the photographer st my local Church and have been using 26M.P. cell phone...Thanks for any advice...
Learn to see your camera settings on your computer. All camera exif files shows date, time, ISO, F stop, shutter speed, and lens used. I have Photoshop Elements. About $69 for last years version. Last years is good enough. Post some samples and ask for advise and you will get great tips here. David

You may find a book on the D3400 by David Busch and or Darrell Young more helpful than the owners manual that comes with the camera in learning your camera.

The first two replies cover it fairly well. Seeing what photo groups are in your location might be helpful too. You will find that it will be easier taking better pictures with the 3400 than the cellphone just because you can put a zoom lense on the 3400.
Go to a local store and buy a battery for it and charge it up. That way when the truck comes you will be ready.
That camera is just out so field guides probably aren't out yet so take your camera in one hand, the manual in the other and shoot, shoot and shoot. Just keep checking for field guides, they are much better than the manual that comes with it.
Welcome to the forum and post some pictures that you have shot with your I phone

Your manual or a book specific to the camera will cover the technical side of things pretty well, but still quite a bit to digest. If you can, find a good book on composition. Learning composition should be a top priority as well, as a poorly composed photo is something you can do with a cheap point & shoot. You bought a nice camera so you might as well take some nice photos. The next hurdle will be post processing. There is a lot to learn but if you put in time every day to either get out and shoot or read UHH to learn it won't be long before you're comfortable with your photography. Good luck and welcome to UHH.

For what it's worth, if you are new to DSLR photography I would first concentrate on getting exposure right with the triangle of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed. Switch on the cameras highlights function on playback mode, it will help.

Go to google, type in "shooting tips for a Nikon D3400" up will come "Nikon D3400 Cheat Sheet, Camera settings for Beginners", "Photo tips Techniques and Tutorials/ Nikon learn and explore". Plus many, many, many, many more. What more could you ask for. Isn't the internet great.

Start in Auto mode. Then try P and then A - aperture. CreativeLive has a very good video about using the D3400.

You couldn't have made a better choice.
All good advice. One thing I did when I got my new camera (Canon 80D - just over a week ago) was read the manual, just to learn what the camera could do. Having shot film SLRs and digital point and shoots in the past, I was amazed to find some of the things the camera could do. Just being aware of the potential was a good start. Now I'm going back and learning how to use some of these features.
BTW, if you can download a PDF of the manual to a laptop, do so. You can search on "flash" or "continuous" or "RAW" or "AF" or whatever, and quickly find what you need.
You should have ask that question before purchased the D3400.
