Not sure about your camera but mine can have up to 51 of those little rectangles. They are focus points. On my camera I can use them all or pic as few as one and move it around my framed composition. For example, if you frame a picture using the rule of thirds and your subject's eye is to the left, you can keep the framed selection and move the focus point over to the eye [left, off center!].

My .02 as well. I have the holy trinity and agree with all that I've read here. I use teleconverters with the 70-200 2.8 and am very pleased with sharpness and clarity.
I tend to stay with the OE manufacturer especially when mating the TC's with the lenses.
I have seen the Tamron 200-500 and have determined that I will hold out until I can afford the [pricey] 600mm from nikon!

LR3 is an excellent product for normal post processing. Especially if the photo was captured in Raw. It will allow you to adjust your exposure and because of the bit depth capture you can recover some blown out areas.
Cameras, no matter how expensive or high end, have inherent weaknesses in that they will interpolate values that the human eye won't! That is why post processing is necessary and has been done from the beginning!
Lightroom3 , as said, is an excellent, and affordable program for this post processing/developing.

Gale,
Your photo's are beautiful! When you clip a white area as the bright sun did here, you can go in and add a little tone (grey tone, say RGB: 252, 252, 252) and then color or otherwise manipulate the pixels any way you want.

I'M WITH YOU, LASKALAS!!!

Welcome to UHH! Post some of those pictures and pay close attention to the aperture setting, ISO setting, and shutter speed. Some of these pros that are very helpful here will ask you stuff relating to those settings.
