I'm in the process of creating a subset of my best family and travel photos to give to my family as JPG's. I'm a Lightroom Classic user, so all my photos are accessed via LRC. If you are a Lightroom user, you know that it is a non-destructive editor. All the edits I have made within LR are stored in the LRC catalog, and have to be exported to produce the set I'm going to give them.

There's one odd thing I've noticed when exporting - it makes the exported files bigger than the original JPG's - sometimes a lot bigger. One possible explanation is that when LR is exporting, adding the edits stored in the catalog may be causing the size increase.

I did a few experiments yesterday, changing the "quality" slider setting on the export screen for several JPG's, and noting the resulting file size. I've attached a screenshot of the results. Here's a couple things I've noticed:
- In each case the 100% quality setting is larger than the original file.
- Sometimes even the 0% quality setting is larger than the original file.
- The smaller the original file, the more massive the size difference, percentage-wise.

So, some questions:
1. Is the size increase vs. the original in fact due to adding the edits before exporting?
2. What does "quality" even mean in this context. The 0% quality photos looked pretty fair on screen.
3. I've been using 80% quality for the exports I've done so far, considering it a good trade-off between file size and the ability to print in a fairly large size. What do you recommend?

I use an Optech strap on my cameras. I see no need to advertise what kind of camera I’m using to anyone interested in relieving me of it. I used a strap that I got in Vietnam, till it gave up the ghost about 6 or 7 years ago. Went with an Optech, and added a second one when I got another camera. I also used a “Trekking” harness to get the load off of my neck and onto my shoulders, until I left it in Victoria Canada on a tour of the Canadian Rockies a few years ago. Tried to replace it, but it’s not being made anymore. BUMMER!

I also use an Optech strap, for the reasons you mentioned. Also, the Optech is nice and "grippy," and won't slip off my shoulder. I'm a confirmed believer that as far as logoed straps is concerned, it definitely doesn't pay to advertise.

I've never seen the point when photo magazines and other publications like Arizona Highways print the shutter speed, f/stop, ISO, and lens information regarding the photos they take. Is this supposed to be educational? The settings were good for that particular time on that particular day, but maybe not so good at other times. They usually don't mention if a tripod was used. Am I missing something?

I'm amazed to see that the number of views on this post have zoomed past 4,200! I was just musing that most photographers don't find them very helpful, but a significant portion of UHH readers feel otherwise - some strongly so. So, if the info helps, that's great!

Hi, my name is Mike I am by profession a sports journalist but trained more in artistic work (MFA from SCAD in painting/fine arts). Most of my photographic work is landscapes, sports, some architecture. I also do a lot of work about the body of athletes and self-portraits after being intrigued by ESPN's famous Body Issue of nude portraits of various athletes. I mostly shoot with the Canon R5 but am fortunate to have an ARRI Alexa from my job and use it for still photos (which yes, it can do!) as well as filming.

When I buy a flash drive, I buy name brands. Even then, I could be buying a counterfeit. A little program called ValiDrive can check the capacity of the drive.

[/i]Why was this created?
During the development of SpinRite v6.1, (GRC's premier mass storage maintenance and data recovery system), we detected that fraudulent and sub-standard quality USB flash drives had become a real problem. These “no brand” drives claim high-capacity and low cost. They are readily found on Amazon, eBay, etc. Was this too good to be true? Yes. It is not true. Their low-quality makes their use risky, and many deliberately misrepresent their size, claiming to be far larger than they actually are.[/i]

I recently bought a couple of thumb drives through Amazon. Thanks to your post, I downloaded Validrive and tested them this morning. Sadly, they actually had about 20% of the advertised space. Thanks for the tip!

DXO Labs is a French photography software company, which markets a number of different software products. Here's the URL for DXO Labs: www.dxo.com. DXO Labs markets both the NIK Suite as well as well as DXO PhotoLab. They are two different products, sold separately, and the activation code of one won't work with the other. The current version of DXO PhotoLab is 7, by the way.

One of the newer customer driven 'features' in the Elements programs is to NOT fill up the customer's disk with things not everyone wants or needs. One of them is ACR. If you don't shoot RAW, you don't need it.

The solution is to put it in the Help menu at the bottom of the list.

Should my solution not work, there is a strong and active Adobe sponsored user forum for Photoshop Elements here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-elements/ct-p/ct-photoshop-elements?page=1&sort=latest_replies&lang=all&tabid=all

While I'm not an Elements user. (I use full PS), I disagree with "If you don't shoot RAW, you don't need it" ACR is loaded with features that can be applied to jpg's.

Photoshop.

Scan it in overlapping sections then combine as a panorama in Photoshop (or equivalent). Photoshop allows you to do this several ways, including collage, which doesn't introduce any distortion correction that happens when the camera points in different directions. It will blend the scans to correct for slight lighting variations.

I have done this with newspapers and it works just fine.

That would have been my recommendation. You beat me to it!

For many photographers who do not apparently have the knowledge you have that information is something of a starting point. New photographers who may not understand the exposure triangle will use the information to take a photograph and then make adjustments until the photograph suits them and their idea of the correct exposure.

I think it is as simple as that. I feel the need to ask why posting the information seems to bother you. You aren't bound to that information are you? Have you noticed many members here will see a photo they like and then will ask the photographer what the exposure information was.

Oh, it really doesn't bother me at all. Certainly in certain circumstances, such as photographing waterfalls, sports, or macro, it can be helpful, but more frequently, I see it used on landscape shots or stationary wildlife, and they seldom mention if a tripod was employed. So sometimes it can be helpful, but more often it can be misleading unless conditions are similar. I'm surprised at how many comments ensued from my post, because it was only a passing musing for me.

Good theories.

Then again, weather might just be cyclic, on a very long cycle, with a sub-cycle or three.
I'm sure some day they might figure it out.....
