the real art in photography is to make a picture-------not take a picture......and i think you have succeeded admirably.

To make something out of nothing is an art.

good basis for studio portraits is as follows.....high intensity overall diffused lighting , with medium intensity direction lights and low intensity spot for special features such as a backlight for the hair and a modelling light for facial modelling.

depending on the focal length of your wide angle lens, which gives great depth of sharpness even at wide aperatures, especially with landscapes......line up your scene and decide what it is you need to have really sharp in the foreground and then set yur actual focus at about 15 ft from the camera....the crucial part is next ......set your aperature to the smallest size (the biggest number) that you know to be your best F stop for overall sharpness. when it comes to landscapes a good rule of thumb to remember is that if you set your F stop to F16 and focus on 20 ft you dept of sharpness will be approx 10ft to infinity.....and remember depending how far away your background is ...in a landscape it is likely to be to far away to be sharp anyway. even if you focus on it.

Danilo,
I have the 5100 as you know and could you explain a bit more on the cable release.? You say a mini usb cable plugs into the camera...? what sort of fitting is on the other end of the cable and will it take a standard release cable plugged or screwed into it.

How do you achive the darker skin tones in portraits and lots of advertising photos that you see in art galleries and photo magazines? ......when i worked for publications years ago editors would not accept photos that didn't show white faces of the subjects...i'm talking news photos of course.
Just shooting with a thin or underexposed negative dosen't give the same result......

you shouldnt have to change the default settings .however if you want to tailor make your colors for your printer or any other devise
if the default settings are not to yur liking or dont fit your specific requirements ..these options are generally meant for unusual color.
in the old days you would choose ..say agfa;kodak;perutz.etc to suit your color favourites. these days you have a lot more options as to the color you wish to make your shots more of a style.
