Thanks for posting the link to Digicam Control. I didn't know it was available. Also thanks for sharing the workflow that you use. It will be a big time saver as I experiment with my new program.

What's a bit strange is that looking at the camera on a PC in a Live View, the subject is a mirror image so if it is a bit too far right, you have to move to the left so it takes some getting use to.

In the "Live view screen" ( in DigicamControl), on the left side of screen is a box labeled "Display". Open it & see if "Flip horizontally" is checked off. If it is, un-check it & you won't have a mirror image any more. That's ALL I know about the program. I'm having problems trying to figure out how DigicamControl works. I have to shut it down AND unplug the USB cable to run the WeMacro controller. If I set my camera (Nikon D-7000) to mirror up, the live view in DigiCamControl won't work. Old man + new computer program = headache!

I started with a lot less. You're "THRIFTY" DIY rig is capable of giving you hours of enjoyment. With patience & practice, you will be able to produce some very nice stacked images. Keep shooting & have fun.

Still need to sort out a satisfactory lighting arrangement, I€am thinking of getting a pair of fan-cooled strobes. Opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.
What camera & flash units are you using? Also, are you using manual settings & how do you trigger you flash units.

If you have a hot shoe mount flash, put one of these http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=fotodiox+diffuser&_osacat=625&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H1.Xfotodiox+6x8+softbox.TRS1&_nkw=fotodiox+6x8+softbox&_sacat=625(or similar) on the flash, try manual camera settings of 1/200 f11 or f 16 and 200 ISO. Most macro shooters also use manual flash settings. I prefer iTTL for the flash. My suggestion would be to pick one method (I'm sure you will have more replies) to try at a time. Try it for several days and report back or start a new thread. But I think most replies will suggest diffused flash plus ??? Good luck!

Lots of possible causes for images that are not "Tack sharp". I have found that my live view (Nikon D-7000 & D-7100) is not reliable under certain lighting conditions. What aperture are you using? I use f 11 most of the time. Never over f 16. Are you using flash? What is the subject? Flowers & insects outside almost always have some movement which is the reason I always use diffused flash. If you can tell us what camera settings, shutter speed, aperture & ISO do you use flash. What subjects do you have trouble with? Anything that might point to a specific problem.

In looking at your equipment list, I think you're looking for a more technical link than those provided. You might do a key word search at http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/ You might also try "Telecentric lens". Hope this helps.

Also, all shots seem a little murky SOOC missing clarity. Too much light perhaps or too little. Suggestions very welcome.
The "murky" could be from light leaking thru loose connection on your tubes. Both of my auto tube sets have a little flex at the joints. Just a thought. It's easy to check, wrap electrical tape around joints on tubes. If the "murky" goes away, problem fixed. But, this may not be the problem. Good luck! Keep us posted.

About using the focus ring versus moving the camera: I was wondering if there were differences in parallax shifts. I am speaking from zero experience, since I have never tried it.
This explains the difference :http://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker/docs/troubleshooting/ringversusrail

Very nice series. Out of curiosity, was the mantis photo planned? Really is hard to find but I finally found it. Neat challenge. Thanks for the diversion.
