Actually it's the New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters. Assembled by J.L.E. Dreyer and published in 1888, it, along with the Index Catalogue, cover most of the brightest non-stellar objects in the sky. Catalogue listing 1514 is a lovely planetary nebula in Taurus. One at which I never fail to point the telescope when it's above the horizon.

The bit about religious roach wars was wonderful and far funnier than the endlessly resurrected jokes posted on here. Well done, sir!

With all the old saws being posted make me wonder if there are any new jokes. I expect most of us were aware of the majority of the jokes while still in our minority. Are there just a finite number of jokes?

The electrical system in my old 1969 XKE didn't leak any smoke, but oil was another matter entirely.

Yes, the meek shall inherit the earth. The rest of us are going to the stars.

The branching between Phylums Arthropoda and Chordata took place millions of years before the family containing cockroaches evolved. Not a single mutated cockroach in any of the Chordata's family trees.

(But... Just between the two of us, there were some inlaws in a previous marriage I still have some doubts about.)

I don't. That generally indicates a problem.

Nah... That's probably the smoke you're smelling. Smoke from an electronic component is a problem.

No one loves the smell of a frying resistor or burning dielectrics in capacitors at any hour of the day.

Why do these things always turn up in the UK? No matter who did it, it is nice work.

Because the two old gents who made hundreds of such circles after quaffing a few at the local public house live in the UK? They showed the rest of the world how to do it with a couple ropes and a plank.

The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Definitely the work of Zeta Reticuli 9. It's a message affirming the end of the world when the Mayan long count ends in December.

Make sure you have your towel with you at all times and "Don't Panic!"

Yeah, but Harrison got his 20,000 quid... eventually. Young Earthers will not be in the lineup for a Nobel or two.

I said I wasn't going into this any further - but I will respond to you who say we are simply unaware of how science works.

Who is this "we" you are talking about? I said YOU are unaware of what a scientific theory is and you haven't posted anything - other than a ton of quotes - that shows me the situation is not the same.

As soon as you start talking about "proven" in regards to a scientific theory, it's obvious you are unaware of the philosophical underpinnings of science.

If you think there is a theory of creationism, present it.

I've been getting emails from TigerDirect about SSD 120GB drives for $59.95. I just had my hard drive go down in one of my H-P laptops that is otherwise pristine, powerful and loaded pretty nicely. It had Vista so that's not going back in! I think I'm going to install a 120GB SSD and Windows 7 or 8 in it. I understand an SSD makes any laptop run like lightning, although this one isn't a slouch anyway.

Tiger Direct opened up a huge store about 40 miles up I-85 from Atlanta. Haven't been there yet because 15 miles up I-85 is Fry's and it's tough to drive past Fry's!

I love the smell of electrons in the morning.

The Hubble has created some of the most incredible photographs ever taken.

The Webb will probably not be as popular since it's designed to work in the infrared rather than visible light. However, it will bring at least as many surprises as the HST as it peers deep into gas clouds impenetrable to the Hubble and take us back to the early days of the universe 14 billion years ago.

It's an exciting time to be alive!

Not bogus, but misleading. For example:

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

It also encompasses those citizens who are among the richest people in the nation. I didn't see any actual numbers about median income comparisons between the counties won by Obama vs. McCain. Would you like to compare the median income of Palm Beach County in Florida to some of the counties that went for McCain in Mississippi?

While I have not looked into the facts of this- your premise is flawed in this part. In any area, the population of the rich is much smaller then the poor, yet all votes are equal in value. ie, one homeless guy's vote "trumps" Donald Trump's.

A quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson is as follows;

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

No known handwritten account of this is known, but the following is:
Jefferson's comment in a prospectus for his translation of Destutt de Tracy's Treatise on Political Economy: "To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, ˜the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, & the fruits acquired by it.'"

The brilliance and genius of the founding fathers always amazes me, that's why I am a conservative- in fact, I think that a return to how they intended the checks and balances to work is in order. Term limits on congress for one would return regular people, who want nothing more than to set things right, back into the mix.

Gonna take a wholesale change of Congress and the House as well as the executive branch to fix this. And all you liberals out there, that is what the first and second amendments were written for and in that precise order. As one will not exist without the other.

As you've probably read after writing this, the whole original post was junk. No reply to your posting necessary.

have no problem whatsoever with respecting others as people and their right to believe whatever they like. But - four points. One, that doesn't mean I have to show any respect for the beliefs themselves, some of which are plain bonkers. Two, a belief or set of beliefs doesn't deserve more respect simply because it is labelled 'religious' - in fact, to the extent that they reflect a reliance on 'faith' or conviction in the face of evidence, they may deserve less. Three, those who believe in 'young earth' and/or the literal truth of the bible, with its fairy stories about magical trees, talking snakes, people who live hundreds of years and magic floating zoos (to say nothing of the horror stories about war, persecution and genocide) really ARE rather delusional and it's hard for a rational person to be always respectful. Four, once someone starts quoting that "the fool saith in his heart" bollocks, the gloves come off!

And remember in technical terms both evolution and creation are theories-Neither one can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Both are a matter of faith.

And with this you show you have absolutely no understanding of what a scientific theory is and why no scientific theory is ever proven correct, only falsified.

It is the reason why creationism is not now, nor has it ever been, a scientific theory. There is no theory of creationism. It's a simple religious belief not supported by the universe in which we live.
