i back all my photos RAW and jpeg on 3 external hard drives in folders by month then year..sometimes i burn special ones to disc..and then at the end of the year i have a book made up by Shutterfly with my favorites...Printing them is still by far the best way to show off your work in my opinion...

there is a box on the top of page when it opens up..if i remember correctly you have to uncheck it as the default application so that it isn't the one to open when importing..

being a snow birder i have gone up and down the east coast many times...there are photo ops anywhere you go if you have the eye....however i find that New York can be one of the most eclectic areas around to shoot many different styles.it is nothing like any other state. in the city there are amazing museums ..the street photos are amazing ..people are so varied..different cultures ..the architect ..parking would be difficult..so you would have to find somewhere out of the area and take a bus or train in...spend a few days..new york has country ..mountains..parks....beaches...and large cities with buildings that have character..you could spend weeks and never get your fill..being a new yorker myself of course i am going to brag about my state...but when you do drive through this state you will not be disappointed..have fun traveling..stay safe..

I'm a Canon shooter, as you know, but I agree that the sensor of the D7200 is much superior with wider dynamic range and no filter. But you also mentioned Canon ergonomics, and for me the ergonomics and feature set of a camera are just as critical to the results I'm seeking. I find that Canon bodies just meet my needs better. I tried the D7200, a terrific camera by almost any standard. But, as much as I wanted to get it, I did not like how it felt in the hand, I also didn't care for the the location and functionality of many of the controls and I especially disliked the menuing system. I'm sure many Nikon shooters would say the same thing in reverse. Few products of any kind are 100% perfect for everyone, and almost every purchase decision I've ever made required compromise to one degree or another. Its just great to have to all those options

so well put..you hit the nail on the head...it is all about what you feel most comfortable with

I am a Canon girl, but both are great camera systems. The only thing I have to say is my friend got a Nikon DLSR and expected me to show her how to use it. I cannot figure out any of the Nikon controls and menu because it is the opposite of Canon! It will be a learning curve for sure. I like being able to change settings and functions on a whim, in the dark or whatever. So I always go with what I am used to. The better you know your gear, the better your photos will be. And I want to be able to use lenses and gear I already own. That's my 2 cents worth.

you are so right...if you start with Canon you do need a learning curve for the Nikon and visa versa..it's sort of like that old commercial MAC vs. PC ..but most photographers eventually pick up both lingo and manage in a pinch...

i think both cameras are good choices...but steer away from kit packages ..you can always buy just the body frame and get lenses that suit your needs with better quality ..that being said i am all about nikon ..i have never been disappointed with the results..or service..the d7200 is a cropped frame and the d500 is a full frame..but if you want a full frame the d810 has been outstanding..they are superior in their lens quality ..in the end the choices are yours alone..what you feel comfortable with .i chose nikon in the beginning because i liked where all function buttons were for my hands to maneuver ..the look and style and most of all the image quality..

i have two of my camera bodies at the nikon factory that have been there for 9 days also so far and figure it will still be a few more before anything happens..did you ever stop to think that the turnover is usually somewhere between 7 to 10 BUSINESS days..not to mention that yours is not the only items that they are working on..people have days off..sick days etc..then if you're waiting for that return time how about the few days it sits in the shipping area to be packaged and actually sent out..if you have a tracking number from when you sent out your lens aren't you covered with insurance ..be patient.I'm sure that your lens will be returned ..every company has delays for some reason or another ..sounds like you're worrying needlessly..if you had a problem with Macy's would you call Sears to solve the problem so why are you even bringing up B and H..hmm

Shutter count is not a good indicator of when cleaning is needed. I wash my cars when they get dirty, regardless of miles driven--sometimes 5 miles, sometimes 500.

i understand that but i do have 3 other much newer camera bodies to use in the meantime .. if the shutter count is ridiculously high i probably won't go for the bucks next time to have them cleaned again but will still use them ..professional cleaning is already a bit too pricey now so by the time they need to go in again it may not be worth it ..instead i would have to put the money into the newer ones.....

i have affinity and find it to be pretty darn good and especially for the price of 50 bucks and use it often...it is similar to photoshop elements but a bit easier to figure out..i do not like lightroom at all..find it very limited ..still use the aperture program for 90% of my editing..hope it doesn't give out on me..

I mailed my D800 to Nikon, they inspected it and cleaned the sensor for $50.

i just brought in 2 of my nikon bodies directly to the new york manufacturer and they are now charging 76 bucks each with a 7 to 10 business day wait...it has surely gone up quite a bit..however i did attempt to clean them both on my own with no success ..still had spots in both ..so better safe than sorry i reluctantly turned them over to get them properly done plus asked them to do a shutter count to see if it would be worth doing another cleaning after this one..i do have 3 other cameras that need to eventually be cleaned..whew..if nikon themselves are charging so much i would hate to see how much a camera store would to send them out for you ..

I will give you my personal opinion on this, if it is not broken do not fix it.
The D700 seems to be doing a good job for your photography. Quality will be much better with the D810 especially if you are a pixel peeper. I seriously question if you will see a big difference with usual enlargements up to 13x19.
If you had the D700 for a long time my suggestion is that you send it to Nikon or to APS (Authorized Photo Service) in Morton Grove, Illinois for cleaning and adjustments. They usually replace the rubber parts covering the body and bring the camera to specs. I recommend APS for their friendly customer service, easy communication and good prices. Their work is impeccable and they only work with Nikon gear.
The D700 as I am sure you know, is still a great camera.
I will give you my personal opinion on this, if it... (show quote)

i agree about getting the camera cleaned and adjusted..in fact i feel that he should do just that and still get the d810...he won't regret it one bit... i am lucky enough to live near the nikon company itself in new york and just brought my two d7000 cameras in for just that ..and i will be dropping off my d7100 and the d810 next..i have my d700 still packed away and havent used it in ages..it is a great camera but i just don't use it anymore because all the batteries etc are interchangeable except the d700 ..

I dont know anything about the d700...my wife and I switch between a d810 and a d7100...And I can tell you will be quite happy with a d810...great IQ...and despite what some say a great BIF camera.

i have the d700 and hardly ever take it out of the camera bag now that i also have the d810 and d7100 ..which i use constantly..the d810 i use with my tamron 70-200mm and the d7100 i use with the tamron 28-75mm..this covers almost all my photographic needs for most shoots..
