I watched a documentary about this guy who is a well known wildlife photographer. His work is amazing.

One seqment showed him shooting a subject and he was in burst mode. You could hear the shutter sound repeating at a very rapid rate.

I am curious to know what settings one would use for that. A, or S mode? metering mode?, focus mode?, etc?

He has published a number of books. Anyone familiar with those where he might talk about this?

Just curious.

Having designed both HDs and then SSDs, I can tell you that this is not a HD issue. If the surface of the HD were damaged by a head crash you would be unlikely to be able to access any data from it. And even if you could the way data is organized on the HD (typically non-contiguous sectors over several non-contiguous tracks) it would not lead to the type of effect you are seeing.

I have seen something like this when I print a picture on my ink jet (but only on the printer not the monitor) and this is due to a printer head alignment issue which is correctable by having the printer go through an alignment cycle.

Not sure why you are seeing this. Hopefully one of the other hedgehogs may have an answer.

I tried this yesterday but must have done it wrong because now I'm not getting any pictures. Wonder why?

Planning on some international travel and want to take my D7500, Nikon lenses, Tamron 18-400 lens, tripod, etc. Given current airline restrictions on carry on, checking bags, any suggestions on best way to safely (theft, baggage handling) take expensive and fragile camera gear. Also safety of leaving in hotel rooms. Do I need to take it all with me everywhere I go?

Your advice and experience would be helpful. Thanks.

Some sort of paraphrase of the old saying "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." should apply here. I haven't had this happen to me but I have been fooled by setting bracketing for a shot and then forgetting its on and wondering in post processing why my subsequent shots are either OK or under or over exposed. So "duh" for me too.

I recommend John Greengo’s “Fast Start D7500” course from Creative Live. (https://www.creativelive.com/class/nikon-d7500-fast-start-john-greengo).

It’s $49 and covers all the features you will need to master the camera. It’s 26 lessons (streaming and/or downloadable).

It also includes all of the slides he presents (pdf format) for future reference if needed.

I was so pleased with this course I have subsequently purchased additional photography courses from him.

The answer is they can. My D7500 has most of those features. Your DSLR is probably an older camera than your P&S.

I also have a Panasonic ZS-60. Both my D7500 and ZS-60 are equivalent feature wise. But the D7500 is my choice for planned photo shoots/trips as it has a bigger sensor and more capabilities via different lenses.

The ZS-60 is for GP photography when I’m out with family and friends and happen to see something that would make a good picture.

Actually I take the ZS-60 with me even on planned photo shoots/trips as a backup camera just in case.

You might consider this online/downloadable course: https://www.creativelive.com/class/nikon-d3100-dslr-fast-start. It covers the Nikon D3100/3200/3300. It's $49.00.

I've done the one for my Nikon D7500 and it was well worthwhile. It covered 80-90% of the functions/setting/buttons, etc. needed to fully understand the camera. The one for your camera should be similar. The instructor John Greengo also has many others classes than go into very detailed aspects of photography. He is a great instructor. Highly recommend him.

First of all two different cameras. P900 point & shoot w/smaller sensor than DSLR D3300. But what was wrong? Focus, color, ???. Once you can be more descriptive then we can help diagnose.

That is entirely normal. Picasa does not do any rendering/enhancement of RAW files as opposed to LR & Photoshop which do some minimal adjustments on import. Picasa is obsolete and not supported by Google. It is not the best choice for any photo post processing. I do like the way it organizes your photos though, much better than Google Photos (IMHO), but I have switched to LR & PS.

I use it. My two Nikon kit lenses don’t have a manual focus switch on the lens, it’s a camera setting. With BBF I am thus able to manually focus then press the shutter button OR press the BBF and use auto focus. It’s also a good way to determine if the lens needs AF Fine Tune. I focus on a optical pattern manually (camera on tripod) and then press the BBF. If the focus changes then (it hasn’t) your lens needs calibration.

The only downside is if I forget to press the BBF I have an out of focus shot. But I very rarely do that.

My kit included the VR for both 18-55 & 70-300. It was the Nikon D7500 kit. Control is not on lens, but in Custom Menus - d9. Purchased from Costco.

But always turn it off when camera is on tripod.

I have the same kit lenses that you have. Recently bought the Tamron 18-400. I did a series of tests:
Camera on tripod.
Aimed at distant subject (with some letters/numbers on it), with Nikon 18-55
Took shots @ 18, 35, 50, changed lens to Nikon 70-300
Took shots @ 70, 100, 200, 300, changed lens to Tamron 18-400
Took shots @ 18, 35, 50, 70, 100, 200, 300 & 400
Printed all (Costco) 8" x 12"
Compared like focal length shots visually and with magnifying glass

Result:
Tamron is as good or better than Nikon up to 200mm, @300mm Nikon is marginally better but only noticeable with magnifying glass. Even the 400 shot looks good.

So, I'm very happy with the Tamron. It beats having to change lenses when shooting a variety of subjects.

That's to be expected. Picasa does not do any enhancement on RAW files. I see the same exact behavior that you are seeing, and I initially had some questions as to why I was NOT seeing this behavior in LR (apparently LR DOES do some enhancement on RAW files on import). Check out this thread: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-525299-1.html#8918442

Also Picasa is obsolete. I really liked it but Google went to Google Photos which does not meet my needs. I use LR.

Perhaps your lens needs calibration? This article explains AF Fine Tune. https://photographylife.com/how-to-calibrate-lenses
