These make a beautiful subject, I have a photo of a group of them on our lounge wall.

I did a group shot before they opened, but it's more of a close-up than macro so I didn't post it here.

Our second batch of crocuses opened this morning!

My setup was simpler than usual- D750, 105 lens with no flash.

Fellows, Here's something that us non-Canon users may find interesting.

I bought one of these today so I'll post more info and example images when it arrives which I suspect to be in a few weeks.

Any more thoughts on this lens? I found my finger hoovering over "Buy-it-now" :)

I tip my hat to you..! Job very well done on what is far more difficult to do than what may be believed by one who has not tried it.

Trying to focusing on a tiny white snowflake on a white background was quite a challenge!

I posted that article a few day ago and it was fascinating! Now if was even more fascinating to see how you applied it and your photos! Great job!

Colder, would definitely be better if I have the choice. If I bought myself a sapphire slide, my wife would put me in the dog house for life!

Very admirable! I like these as much as those 'perfect' snowflake pictures! As I understand it, what helps is to keep everything cold, so they don't melt right away.

Thanks! At these temperatures, I should have kept the flash outside for the full session. I think that was the main heat source.

A friend sent me a link about a guy shooting super high resolution snowflakes.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/these-are-highest-resolution-photos-ever-taken-snowflakes-180976710/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=socialmedia

I usually try shooting on a cold mitten or foam from a jewelry box, but his setup got me thinking about shooting on glass.
If it was colder, I could have used a brush to single out individual flakes, but it was 30 degrees this morning. I only had about 10 seconds before the melting started.
The wireless transmitters worked well and I figure most people in the macro forum have off camera flashes.

I tried and failed. The bubble froze but I did not get the crystal formation. Was it just regular bubble mix or did you add glycerin?

Jonesy

Regular bubble mix didn't work for me. I'm sure there are other types of liquid you could use, but for me, the mix i gave on the first page worked for me.

It just occurred to me, I could probably do this in a freezer. Hardly gets below freezing around here outside.

Maybe a walk-in freezer.

Really great. This is encouraging me to get off my dead duff and do something. It's 0 to +10 F where I'm at so I'm going out later today to try something new. Again thanks for the idea and example. This made my day.

Zero to 10! You could get the crystals to form super fast.

Have any without a clear top so I can compare?

Here's one a guy did earlier this month:

Nope. Those get deleted.

Thanks very much. How long to let it freeze? Just until it shows pretty shapes or pops?

The colder it is, the faster the ice crystals form. This one took about 20 seconds. I don't like the full ice look, the clear top is my favorite.

Wow. Please share the technique, because this is really nice.

The liquid
200 ml warm water
35 ml corn syrup
35 ml Dawn dish soap
2 tablespoons sugar

You need to mix the liquid at least a few hours ahead of time. I mixed this batch last year!

I used a tube made from a fat ink pen to blow the bubbles..

I used a Nikon D750, 105mm af macro lens, iso 1250, f/9, 1/125.
