Went out about every 10 or so minutes and took multiple shots then pulled out of the many these seven to have a composite. Used 500mm mirror lense on the first three then 200mm for the last 4. Had fun (from midnight til 4:30am CDT). Had a hard time keeping a good focus.

Larry, using your Cell Phone when that's all you have is fine. I bought my Samsung Galaxy S4 two day before I took these. I wasn't sure how to do it, but took a chance. The camera in this phone is amazing. I have fairly new Panasonic Lumix FZ200, but is was snug at home. I bought a Gorilla tripod and a special attachment to attach the cell phone. So if I have time I can use it attached to the rearview mirror, a fence or anything handy.
BTW your shot is very nice, maybe a bit of tweaking in PS would bring out the colours and the drama a bit more.
Thanks for showing it.

Thanks, your photos are very nice. I didn't post process for color but you are right, it would help.

Very cool!

Thanks, just happened to be in the right spot at the right time. I like the little bit of red that the caboose adds.

Which best buy did you get this price for? Im getting the same package but it will be $750 for the d5200 with the 18-55 lense and then its $396 for the 55-300 lense!

I got refurb D5200 body for $570 and 18-200mm VR II for $580. However, the prices I just checked are quite a bit higher now. The difference in 200mm on a DX is only 3 degree view angle from the 300mm. http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/

Nice catch Larry. Smartphones do definitely eliminate the "you should see what I saw" factor.

Yep, there were quite a few uploaded on the local TV station weather share site http://ushare.wfaa.com/media/6258813

I was going to friends for monthly poker night about 30 minutes before sunset and it had been storming for most the afternoon. It was still raining quite a bit, however, the sun dropped below the clouds and I pulled over in Colleyville Texas by the railroad. I caught the rainbow with the old red caboose and water tower. I wish I had my D5200 but the iphone pano did an ok job and without it, would have had to rely only on memory.

Railroad to a pot of gold?

Can anyone who has a 5200 help make a decision.I have a d50 using a tamarin 18-200.Am thinking of upgrading to the 5200 because mine only has 6 megpixels where the 5200 has 16 or 24.Bestbuy has it on sale for 750 with 18-55 and 55-300 lens included. And i hear the 5200 is lighter too since i am 72 yrs old. Thanks in advance

I purchased a refurbished D5200 body and refurbished Nikkor 18-200mm 3.5/5.6G VR II in October after trying a D60 for about 3 weeks. Wanted the extra ISO/Megepixels and flippy LCD screen. I added a battery grip and am very happy with the feel and function. I got a 35mm f1.8G also but the 18-200 is on most of the time. I skipped the kit lens and went with the superzoom and really like not having to change lens.

Congrats on all your prep, and I think you got a good mate to your camera with the tripod.

It has been so friggin cold this winter I have not wanted to go out and shoot much. Tennessee usually has very mild winters, not this year (damn global warming) everything is brown outside, 1st time in 24 years I've lived here that the grass has all died and turned brown. We usually have some early wild flowers this time of year, but not this year. Very depressing.

Been in Texas for 27 years now and brown grass is the norm in winter. Originally from Michigan and don't remember it being ordinary with four beautiful seasons but don't miss the cold. Stopped and took pictures (ordinary) of trees at the local community college parking lot awhile ago. Liked this one particularly.

If you could have only one lens for your camera for general photography, which would it be? It would not necessarily be the lens that came with the camera.

I use my 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR II probably 90% but occasionally need f1.8 of my prime 35mm.

You city folks. Think your the only ones that live in Texas. It was 6 degrees the other day with a -10 chill factor in Lubbock. My radio froze in my vehicle. Been shooting basketball games indoors. To cold to go chase the Canadian Geese.

Yeah, Texas is big enough to have lots of extremes from end to end.
