Can anyone who has a 5200 help make a decision.I have a d50 using a tamarin 18-200.Am thinking of upgrading to the 5200 because mine only has 6 megpixels where the 5200 has 16 or 24.Bestbuy has it on sale for 750 with 18-55 and 55-300 lens included. And i hear the 5200 is lighter too since i am 72 yrs old. Thanks in advance

I have owned Nikon cameras since 1972. Last November I purchased a D5200 as my sixth Nikon body. I love the light weight (since I add a Nikkor 105G macro lens + Nikon SB-500 speedlight), and I love 24Mp! The kit lenses are of plastic construction, so quite light weight.
They work well in normal daylight situations, but are considered "slow" for low light capture.

I received the same outfit you are looking at in November of last year. Took it to Parris Island to photograph my son's graduation from Marine Corp Boot camp in December. The 300mm zoom got me some nice shots, but I've been really impressed with the clear, close cropping I've been able to do with the 24MP images. It also has the articulating rear screen which has been a big help on a couple of occasions. All in all I think you would be pretty pleased with that package.

I too have a D5200, it was an upgrade from my old sony. I really like it. It mainly gets put to use photographing my granddaughter with 50mm prime lens but i am hoping the birthday fairy will bring a macro lens my way. i have done some long exposures at night time too which i am very pleased with. The price sounds good for the package you are looking at and the second kit lens i got with my package was 55-200mm so you are doing better than me getting the 55-300mm.

I find it a easy weight to use and the buttons are all easy to reach and not fiddly. You will have fun with it.

Good point. BJ's, Sams's and Costco have good combo sales.

Also, consider a refurb body, and buy the lens of your choice separately - used or refurb.

I have the D5100, which I love. I'm looking for a D5200, body only, since I already have most of the lenses I want. I've been looking at eBay and Amazon, but the body-only prices have not come down significantly, especially since the D5300 is out.

Do you have only the 1 lens?

My advice, buy the D5200 body only...US warranty! Pick and choose your new lenses one at a time.
Consider looking here at the UHH classifieds for lenses.

I just purchased the Costco bundled D5200 with both lenses last week - I've been having a blast learning all the bells and whistles. I think its a great camera, lightweight, and not big or bulky. The photo quality has blown me away, just in the automatic mode! Now I am playing around with shutter, aperture, etc and finding even more satisfaction. You'll like it...a smart choice.

I bought my 5200 just over a year ago and I love it. It's gone pretty much everywhere with me, except for the beach. It works well for me that it is a little on the smaller side. It makes it easy for my hands to maneuver on the body because I have small hands. In fact sometimes it seems almost too small because I'm not used to having a camera body that fits my hands so well. And I love the lenses I got with mine. I use the 55-300 almost all the time. And the 24mp on it is amazing. I love the photos I've taken with this camera.

I forgot to mention I'll be shooting the Mexican 1000 on/off road desert auto race in May with this camera. I have protective gear to keep everything safe from the desert (UV filter for the lens, raingear for the body) which is a wise addition if you plan on shooting at the beach or desert. Fun times!

Nikon D5200 does not have dust seals in camera, therefore susceptible to dust/moisture if used is dirt or sandy areas a lot. Same with using in rain without rain cover.

That's why I suggested the filters and rain gear.

The articulating screen is what I miss most on my D7000. At our age it is getting harder and harder to get up and down for low position shots.

I agree... I almost didn't buy the D7100 because of it. Great camera, still hate the contortions I have to go through for certain shots... I am at one of 'those' ages also...

:-)
