Yes, I am equally pleased with my new "eyeballs." Glad yours have worked out for you.

Yes, live and learn. By the time 2024 gets here, I will be knocking on the door of 80. As it will come though the Dallas area, I will plan to photograph it from my backyard with my new Canon 100D.

After two years of planning, I was all set to photograph the total solar eclipse. I bought a Canon 80D and a Tamron 150-600mm lens for the occasion. I ordered solar filter material from Thousand Oaks about six months ago and had enough material to make a filter to cover my lens and make my own filter "glasses," because I thought the store-bought ones were a little flimsy. I practiced using the filter and Tamron for several weeks and researched aperture and shutter speeds for the various stages. Six other family members joined me in Rexburg, Idaho and we were all set up for a wonderful experience. I was very pleased with the resulting photographs.

In addition to my 80D, I brought along my older 70D outfitted with a nifty-fifty lens so that I could take candid photos of the family during the event. Unfortunately, when I viewed everyone through the 70D + 50mm, all I saw was a blurry image. After several attempts, I could not see clearly through the viewfinder. When I looked at the images on the screen, they looked fine. I reached the "oh, well" moment and abandoned this part of the experience as I wanted to concentrate on the eclipse itself.

It wasn't until the next day that I figured out my problem. I hadn't used my 70D in quite some time. In the interim, I had cataract surgery on both eyes which restored my vision to 20/35 in both eyes. I never changed the diopter setting on my 70D to match my new "eyeballs."

I will be sure to check that in preparation for 2024!

I believe that you will be impressed with your refurbished Canon 80D. I bought a refurbished 70D about three years ago and was a little skeptical about buying "gently-used." I was so happy with the 70D that when I was ready to upgrade to a 80D, I had no reservations whatsoever about watching the Canon site until an 80D was offered. Go through the menu and practice with all the settings. Try a couple of lenses on your 80D and compare the results against your previous camera.

As far as I know, you cannot determine the shutter count on the 80D.

Good luck and happy shooting.

In the interest of accuracy, I offer this. The player was not a rookie. He is Todd Frazier, a veteran, and had just been traded to the Yankees from the White Sox. It was his first at bat in pinstripes. The blame, if it can be called that, was probably not his. Didi Gregorius was the runner on second and he did not run to third as he should. After the quick putout at second and the throw to first, Didi was caught in a rundown between second and third and was called out for running outside the baseline. Since the force was off, the runner from third scored.

I haven't seen this suggestion yet, but it is worth a try. Have you formatted the memory card used? If a card was used previously, say in an Canon 70D, it will need to be formatted in and for the 80D. Hope this helps.

There are a couple of ways to change the settings to shoot in RAW in your 70D. First is to bring up the touch screen in the back of the camera. Touch the "Q" and then hit the image quality which is the fourth row down on the right. You probably have it in JPEG. This will bring up the RAW and JPEG choice screen. For no RAW, the [---] will be highlighted. Touch the RAW position to highlight it. You are now set to shoot in RAW. (The JPEG choices work the same way.) The second way is to go to the menu and scroll to the first setting on the left of the little camera icon. "Image Quality" should be first item below. Touch the screen and the RAW/JPEG screen will again open.

As others have mentioned, there are gobs of videos to teach you about your 70D. Don't be intimidated. I have had my 70D for two years and still marvel at the control that I have over so many aspects of my images.

I suppose photographic images are representations of something, somewhere, sometime. As such, an image cannot be the thing it is intended to represent, anymore than the arrangement of the letters "a-p-p-l-e" can be that fruit to consume. If we are skilled enough and creative enough to make our photographs metaphors of the impressions of the our world and its events, then we are lucky indeed.

I told my son this when he took up photography a couple of years ago:

You see a photograph of a drop dead gorgeous woman and you are more interested in the reflection in her eyes to see what lighting was used.

It's a good question. I would never make my photography a full time business. I started a handyman business after I retired from teaching, but found it consumed more time than I was willing to devote to it.

When we moved to Texas, I found small paid photo gigs in our community; mostly golf tournaments, milestone birthday parties or family reunions. I also do portraits at our New Year's Eve party. I do not do weddings. A small group dedicate their time to organize and hold an annual veterans dinner in November. I have donated my services for those events.

All these keep my photography within the realm of "fun" and my efforts are appreciated. There isn't a lot of money involved, but it does satisfy buying a new lens or piece of gear I've had my eye on.

You might go to Home Depot or Lowe's and check out hollow core door slabs (without jambs). They come in various widths and can be hinged together. Look for the ones without door knob holes. They have a birch veneer on both sides and cost about $50/slab. At that cost, you might want to start with two or three slabs and perhaps add to the "wall" later.

Yes, it will, Dave. Will the AC3 be in there as well? Grew up in Queens; now in Granbury, TX. I guess two old New York City kids can trust each other.
