I gave into a GAS attack yesterday and ordered a reconditioned 80D from Canon. What sorts of things should I be checking for when it arrives?

Same as a new camera as it essentially is. Any physical marks? What is the shutter count? Do your lenses operate when mounted? Can you access the images, JPEG and RAW, from your computer? Did you receive all accessories including cables, manuals, software, battery, charger, and warranty card?

Just enjoy the camera, I'll venture to say it will better than an new one coming off the assembly line because Canon did a proper job of reconditioning the 80D.

You have nothing to worry about, it will be the same as a new camera, maybe better.

You check it the same as a new one. Give it to the attendant, who will give you a receipt. Look at the receipt to be sure you are not waiving their responsibility for lost or stolen items.

Most of us are unable to find flaws in the exterior of our refurbished cameras from Canon, and hopefully any other manufacturer. The most important part of your purchase is the support that comes with the camera. Canon's phone support is superb. Got a question? Call Canon, the techs at Canon are like the rest of us, photographers looking to make a buck with a camera. They will talk to you about anything camera related. Keep the number handy. They can give tips and light your creative fire is that's what you need. Good luck with your "new" 80D, many, many shots to go. Have fun!

I have a reconditioned D810 that I purchased direct from Nikon and it operates flawlessly. Go through everything, mechanical, controls and software and make sure it works. You have a limited warranty from Canon for the rebuild?

I've bought a lot of refurbished bodies (mostly Nikons), and I've gotten nothing but perfection, often with shutter counts under 50. Just look it over and make sure everything works. If there is a problem, you can return it for another.

Take some pictures and see if it works. Make sure it has the latest firmware and up date it if needed. If you think the sensor might be dirty, put a lens on the camera, stop down to f22 and take a picture of the blue sky and over expose by a couple of stops. Download the image and check at 100% view for spots.

Most of the time, a camera either works, or it doesn't. I bought my 7D Mark II as a refurb, and my friend Bob just bought the same camera you did from Canon on the 4th of July and got a great deal and it works fine.

I believe that you will be impressed with your refurbished Canon 80D. I bought a refurbished 70D about three years ago and was a little skeptical about buying "gently-used." I was so happy with the 70D that when I was ready to upgrade to a 80D, I had no reservations whatsoever about watching the Canon site until an 80D was offered. Go through the menu and practice with all the settings. Try a couple of lenses on your 80D and compare the results against your previous camera.

As far as I know, you cannot determine the shutter count on the 80D.

Good luck and happy shooting.

Your kidding right? This is a joke? You cannot check out a camera when you get it? Is it digital with a viewing screen on the back? You can use ALL the functions of the camera and see the result right away? You can check Program, Aperture, Shutter, and Manual mode and not see the results right away on the screen on the back of the camera? You cannot attach a flash and check the flash mode out? You are not going to go through all the shutter speeds and aperture setting? YOU SHOULD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of my equipment is "refurbished". The beauty of Canon refurbished equipment is that it is guaranteed for 1 year, just like their "new" equipment. You won't be disappointed.

I've always been hesitant to purchase a refurbished camera, but hearing all the positive feedback i think that the next camera i will look into it.
