In many of the posts when the discussion is mirror vs mirrorless, I see the statement “mirrorless isn’t for everyone”. I’m am probably the antithesis of a professional photographer so I don’t really understand the statement. I see folks on here talking about shooting wildlife, sports, portraits, landscape etc with mirrorless. What are the downsides of mirrorless other than those who have invested in Mirrored systems don’t want to change…which is understandable. I’m not trying to open a can of here…just curious as to what some of you fine folks think. Thanks!

For me, I haven’t noticed any “downsides” of mirrorless cameras, except for a learning curve. Although I’m in my seventh decade on the planet, I actually enjoy learning curves. Learning something new that challenges the mind or body or both is vitally important for maintaining good mental and physical health. I’m enjoying the challenges of my mirrorless cameras and have found my new skills add to my skills with mirrored cameras. I’m looking forward to new technologies as well …

I have an Olympus Tough TG series camera. With RAW have a 45mb file and can make decent prints from it. I't's small and easy to use with different settings depending on the situation and is waterproof to 12 feet and use it for river trips and otherwise.

Nice!

I previously made a suggestion on a camera or two. But I have to say, I just got a new iPhone 13 today. (Mandatory upgrade to 5G for my carrier.). It has amazing photo and video capabilities. Will it replace my mirrorless system? Not yet. But phones are getting better and better. I know it’s blasphemy, but I don’t think I’d buy a small point and shoot at this point having this phone.

Add to that the editing capabilities of something like Snapseed and it is a formidable system.

Greetings, I am going back to picture-taking hopefully, and would appreciate any thoughts about an appropriate (i.e., inexpensive, small, travel worthy, "exposure adjustable", easy to transfer photo, etc.) Thanks very much if you have a suggestion or two... Jas

It would help to know which iPhone you currently have and whether or not you plan to upgrade your iPhone. IMO, the latest iPhones have the ability to take excellent photos, along with its editing software. IMO, it would take a significant step up in camera ability, and editing ability, to beat the newer iPhones’ potential. A couple from my 12 Pro Max:

I cut my Lightroom teeth on Scott Kelby's Lightroom 5 book. He has since been produciing another one for every new Lightroom iteration. Highly recommend. I understand the desire for an actual book. You can take notes of something to remember and bookmark things that you'll probably forget and need to look up again!

Requires a subscription, but Kelby’s videos on Lr are very helpful with organizing photos logically and with Lr updates, and you have access to all the other videos on myriad photography topics. A nice way to be up and running on topics quickly! Worth the money, IMO.

Watches (Swiss, Japanese, etc) with mechanical movements will never be as accurate as quartz watches, radio-controlled watches, or blue-tooth, phone-connected watches, and yet, mechanical watches have been more popular than ever, after a brief slowing in popularity, and more new companies are producing them. The reason is mechanical movements are “technologically beautiful” compared to solid-state technologies. My D850 is “technologically beautiful,” and I’m keeping it and using it no matter how many mirrorless cameras I buy in the future.

I’m curious what the Ugly Hogs consider the pros and cons of a lens like this for an everyday, walk-about lens (in addition to the usual macro uses). Some specs: f/2.8 to 22; minimum focus distance 0.53 ft.; 260 g; currently on sale $599.95.

I don't think so. Look at that audience. Selfies rule and those pictures that are taken are shared with an audience that takes a look and moves on. Two years ago our daughter was married. There were 150 people. Our age group mid 70's to the late seventies. The people that had an envelope, not a box. The other age group. the early thirties to mid-thirties. The only DSLRs were the photographer and her 2 assistants. The rest had Cell Phones.

Good point … but, in my mind people who are selfie driven are a unique group apart from “photographer.” I don’t mean to insult anyone.

Yes, for the same reason, I pay a lot more attention to keeping ISO low. I don’t how many, but I’ve learned a good number of things by reading questions/comments from “new” photographers and “old”/professional photographers. This includes takings shots and PP. I look forward to reading UHH every morning. Thanks to everyone!

At 61, I’m still very keen on mastering basics in my medical practice, martial arts and photography. But, I also enjoy playing with technology, but not as a method for cutting corners on mastering basics. I won’t buy a Z9 because of its size (I don’t use a battery grip), but I will update my D850 and Z7 II when adequate advances in the technology interest me. I’d like Z9 technology in a smaller package!

I now bring just one body and lens: D850 + Sigma 24-105 Art or Z7 II + 24-70 f2.8, along with my Peak Design tripod. On rare occasions, I wished I had my 16-35 f4. It works for my travel/landscape shooting. I love traveling light and simple!
