Paul's Photo, local popular camera store here in Torrance, CA, had a Nikon Z9 event tonight. Mark Comon, CEO of Paul's, brought along several Nikon representatives with a couple of Z9's.
After a presentation we got to touch, feel and check out the speed of the focus etc. They brought like 4 different lenses along to try out too.
My real interest was the difference in size and weight in the Z9 compared to my D850's. Being the team photographer for the Tiger Squadron, a precision aerial formation flying team, I'm cramped in tight quarters and was interested in the weight and size of the Z9 compared to my D850's.
Well the weight difference is insignificant which surprised me, but the size is a tad smaller.
I typically use my D850 with a 24-120 lens. However, when we are in tight formation my 14-24 works best.
So my new setup will be the Z9 and the Z 14 to 70mm lens. this should help with the weight and size considerably. Especially when we do loop de do's.
After holding and firing off a bunch of shots, not to mention the speed of the zoom and tracking features, I can't wait to get the Z9.

I don't see a 14-70mm lens in their Z lens roadmap. There is a 14-24, a14-30 and a 24-70. Perhaps you meant one of those.
Some pretty amazing shots--whatever camera and lens were used.
I'm sure it's an amazing camera, but to be honest I expected the focus to be sharper. (perhaps it was the conditions). Regardless, they are still wonderful shots, thanks for sharing.

I am very happy for Nikon. I have been using them professionally since 1969. My current Sony a9 (now 4 years old) is still smaller, faster, and captures 20 fps in RAW. I do not see the advantage of buying the Z9. I hope Nikon can produce a camera better than Canon or Sony, but unfortunately it may be a couple of years yet. I hope I am wrong.
Great comment, especially the pic of the D850 w/ battery grip. This serves to show a camera with an integrated grip is really no different than another full-frame camera with an attached battery grip. (size & weight wize ...)
Yes, you are correct. 14-30 is what I meant.
Wishful thinking I guess.
Just to be clear, The shots I posted were taken with my D850 and 24-120mm lens. Not the Z9.
As for sharpness, in order to get prop movement, I shoot at 1/250th or even slower. The ride in a Nanchang is not the smoothest. So there is probably some camera movement.
Not only is it a stunning camera but unfortunately it comes with a stunning price, I will keep my DLSR as with most of us camera bugs we can only afford so much.

Yes, that is several steps above the cost I can justify.

Imagine shooting thru thick curved plexi takes a toll on sharpness.
I fly with the canopy open.
Might be my shaking hands from the cold.
Good pics. I have no doubts that the Z9 is a great camera; but, for me, the best camera is the one I can afford as it allows me to enjoy this great hobby.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My cameras are for pleasure, not profit. If I did this professionally, it would be different.
