I always set ISO first.
Then I decide on Shutter speed if I want to stop action or aperture priority if I ‘m shooting still life.

Used to use spot metering on my Nikon D500. But I wasn’t happy with it for sports photography, especially ice hockey. Then I read Steve Perry’s eBook on The Secrets of Nikon’s Auto Focus System and have been using the 3D metering mode. I find he’s right. This is a better mode for quick action sports with the face recognition enabled, I get good facial features, through the face guard. Facial expressions of hockey players can be priceless. Best to use with BBF.

UPDATE

i shot an ice hockey game last night in JPG. On the SD card there were some old RAW files not previosly imported. All the images transfered to Photos, fine. Then I removed the card. The RAW files vanished. The JPGs remained visible as they should have.

I’m hoping this will get the Apple engineers one step closer to figuring out why my Photos app has lost its RAW capabilities.

That’s what’s so befuddling to me. I too have used it flawlessly. Then this disappearing act started couple a weeks ago with the XT-3. Now it’s with the D500.
I did tap the blank boxes several times, no luck. I shut and restarted the iPad to reboot. No luck.
I think my work around till Apple figures it out is to import directly into LRCC.

I have experienced a problem when I transfer images from an SD card to Photos on an iPad Pro using the Apple card reader ( the “dongle”??)that plugs into the lightning port.

Upon inserting the memory card into the slot and then plugging it into the iPad port, the “Import” function is activated and the import begins. (You can select “all” or select only those images you want to import) Depending on how many images you import, the “Import Complete” message will eventually appear. You can then select “Keep” images or “Delete” from card. DON’T press “delete” .
After import is complete, you will see all your imported images on the screen. No problem so far.
Then, remove the card or unplug the adapter from the iPad port, and all the imported images VANISH. The only remnant of the imported images are blank boxes, like space savers, where each of the images were before unplugging the card.

I’ve been in touch with Apple Care whose engineers have advised me that there have been such reports. I am working with an Apple adviser and will let you know what they come up with.

The only way I have been able to see the images is by importing them from within LRCC on iPad from the Photos Camera Roll—which are just blank boxes.

I am shooting with a Nikon D500 with a pro master SD XC II (3) 64 GB Velocity memory card, formatted in camera before the shoot. I’ve used it before with no problem. All images are shot in RAW.

The iPad Pro software is version 12.1.1 which is the latest.

I noticed the same issue about a month ago when I tried shooting with a Fujifilm XT-3.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

I too am getting tired of lugging the weight and bulk of my beloved D500–especially with its heavy 70-200 f/2.8. But in terms of its speed and buffer size, its low light capabilities, and its durability, I have yet to find a a better camera for fast indoor sports, like ice hockey.

But then I rented the Fujifilm XT-3. Now that’s a very viable option. Lighter, smaller, tough and fast and accurate AF. Definitely worth a try.

I bought the pencil with my iPad Pto. Its more a pain in the ass than a helpful device. I upload from SD card to LRCC with the Apple dongle and edit in LRCC but can edit just as well with my pointer finger.
I love all my other Apple amd Mac devices but the pencil in my experience is a disappointment.

I take my camera; iPhone, iPad and the Apple “dongle” with ten 128 gig SD memory cards with me on all trips.—a separate card for each day.

I upload a days’ shots at the end of each day through the dongle onto either the iPhone or iPad.,They all get uploaded into Photos. They then go into iCloud and then to both devices.
I then remove the SD card from the dongle and store it into slot #1 in my card carry case preserving the images on the SD card till I get home.,i put the next card into the camera and use it on day #2, etc. repeating the same process each day.

Apple’s Photos app has gotten sufficirntly advanced to do basic editing. For more advanced editing, I use LR CC on the iPad or if necessary on the iPhone simply by importing rhe images from Photos’ camera roll for further editing via LRCC which easily sees Photos camera roll.

So, by the time I get back home, all my images are in 3 places: the SD cards, icloud and the “keepers” are in LRCC.

I find that as I develop better photography skills I don’t take as many shots as I used to so upload times are shorter as WIFI gets faster.

My iPhone is always in my pocket, my IPad stays in rhe hotel room safe.

I haven’t found a better action camera than the D500 with the xqd card. Would be grateful though if I could find a xqd card reader that can be inserted into the thunder plug of an iPad Pro which I now use for post processing. Does anyone know of one? Thanks

I have owned the G85 for over 2 years. It is excellent in every respect. I also have a full frame rangefinder that I use for street photography and a crop sensor that I use for sports. But don’t use those as a basis of comparison. I use the G85 for travel. It’s light and compact I and use Leica/Lumix lenses which are tack sharp. M43rd sensors are not meant for low light photography, but with a fast lens, they do fine. Battery life is not an issue if you carry a couple of extras. They’re small and light and fit into a pants pocket. Image Quality is also excellent. I especially like the very easy menu system and the exposure controls. Also, the cully articulated screen is a delight. I bought it new when it cost $999. They are much less now. A definite BUY.
