I’m starting to like the newest Lightroom CC and I’m wondering if the 2nd gen Apple Pencil is worth the $130 that it cost? Anyone using this setup on the new IPad Pro? I have a gift card from work and though about picking one up but if it’s not worth it I won’t bother. It would be the only thing I would use it for as I can’t draw a stick man if I tried and don’t take any notes on my IPad. Thanks guys!

Have you considered using a Wacom tablet and pen for editing images with Lightroom/Photoshop. Refurbished models may be available from the company. Check out videos on YouTube regarding Wacom.

I have not but thank you for pointing me in that direction. Will look up some videos.

He was asking about the iPad pencil, not the Wacom.

Well I bought one, I have found the battery is usually dead and the stupid thing has to be plugged in to the USB port to recharge. And the tip is easy to lose, and it's small and Apple did not put a holder on the iPAD case for the pencil. Bad design all around by Apple. So haven't really used it. But that is me. And I hear that the Pencil #2 is much better.

I recommend you take your iPad and photos to the Apple store and ask them to let you demo a pencil. If they refuse, I'll send you mine and you can try it and see if you like it. I doubt I will miss it. If you like it can buy you own and send mine back. If you don't like it you can just send mine back.

Yes, absolutely if you intend to do editing on your iPad. And there are other stylus devices out there that work with iOS, but none as good as the Pencil. Apple is very restrictive as to what you can connect to its portable devices.

Thank you very much for the offer. I do have a Best Buy locally that would let me try that I’m pretty sure. Apple is a 2.5 hour drive from me so I never get to an actual store. I will run by BB after Christmas and may contact you if I don’t have any luck. Thanks!

I bought the pencil with my iPad Pto. Its more a pain in the ass than a helpful device. I upload from SD card to LRCC with the Apple dongle and edit in LRCC but can edit just as well with my pointer finger.
I love all my other Apple amd Mac devices but the pencil in my experience is a disappointment.

You are describing the first generation Apple pencil which did sound cumbersome. Second generation is much improved. The new pencil attaches magnetically to side of the iPad and charges there automatically. There is no tip to detach or connection to USB port. It's a strong attachment so you can carry the iPad with the pencil attached without requiring separate pencil storage.

I use the new iPad pencil with LR CC and Affinity on my iPadPro. I feel that it gives you a finer control than your finger.

Agree, it is a good tool for editing. Also agree there are some reasonably easy solutions to its problems, some of which cost a little money.

You’ll want a case for the iPad anyway, and my second case is a Targus that has a pencil holder

You can buy a silicone piece to secure the recharge adapter and cap to the end of the pencil

I took an old pen cap and drilled it through, slid it over the pencil so it doesn’t roll away

Easy to lose the adapter, hard to get a replacement...but you can charge through the USB port, but then can’t use the iPad at the same time

Battery life is shortening over time

Overall, the precision it provides is great

Hi. While I cannot comment directly on the pencil with LR, I can contribute to some of the more general discussion on the pencil and case

As I write this on my iPad, I am using a ZAGG Bluetooth case/keyboard which is truely excellent. (Get the slimbook pro or tuffbook, not the basic slimbook, which has a hinge design issue). Keyboard is truly excellent, will support up to 3 BT items, which means I have also tied into my iPhone, which is really convenient. Full keyboard with great “action”, and a holder for the pencil. Provides a case for the back, keyboard folds up to protect the face, and has a stand built in for propping it up). I really like the slimbook pro as the keyboard detaches (magnetically) so I can just use it as a stand or pull the keyboard close while the screen is further away.

You won’t believe how nice it is NOT to use the on-screen keyboard!

Treat yourself to a late Christmas gift!!!

I have an iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil and use LR...I firmly endorse the use of the pencil. It is well worth the cost. I lost my first pencil and felt lost till I replaced it...you will not regret getting it.

He offered a suggestion. Wacom uses a pen. The OP thanked him for his advise.
