When I upgraded to my D7200 from the D3200 I kept them both. Very good decision. I find myself almost always carrying both...different lenses for different purposes. I have two Black Rapid sling straps and wear one on the left and one on the right. Whether I'm out for a half hour or a half day, I find myself making more captures and of more variety because I have more immediate options.
I own both the Nikon 40 and the Nikon 105 f/2.8 and I LOVE the 105. It's not super expensive but it is very sharp and very flexible. It gives decent working distance from your subject and has great image quality. It is my favorite of all my lenses and stays on my D7200 90% of the time...I use it for everything and love it for macro. YMMV.
Pretty much exactly what I just got...
Thank you all. I appreciate the feedback and would welcome any constructive criticism.
I'm pretty new to the game and this is my first Fall with my cameras. I'm trying! And having fun!
I don't use filters...never have. I'm sure I have many enemies but image quality is important and filters always, always affect that.
Very nice! Wonderful location.
You know, I just joined a few weeks ago looking for some friendly information. But people like Jim Bob and RWR, you're unnecessarily rude. If you don't like a post, ignore it. If this keeps up, I'm gone. I enjoy photography, but I'm finding that it can be really tough to enjoy photographers.
I have no regrets. And for $50 more than what you're looking at with the pistol grip, I think it's definitely worth it. I wish I had the money back from the two I bought and regretted! Good luck.
Hey Mark. I do similar stuff as well as some closeup photography and I have tried several pistol grip heads. I have since ditched them both and would not consider that style again. I have replaced them with the Manfrotto MHXPRO-3W (at B&H
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1034870-REG/manfrotto_mhxpro_3w_3_way_pan_tilt_head.html). My issues with the pistol grips are that they simply can't be fine tuned enough, they don't do well with heavier bodies and lenses, and they're somewhat unwieldy at the top of your tripod. The 3-way has been worth every single penny. Even with my heaviest combinations, it is rock solid. It can be very easily fine tuned, thanks in part to the simple to adjust axis knobs but also due to the adjustable friction control. That allows you to fine tune your adjustment with some friction until you have it where you want it. Then you can lock it down with the locking knobs. That's my two cents worth. Let us know what you decide.
You may wish to check out the Spider Holster company. Their straps are not cheap but they offer products that can do what you want and some other great flexibility options for tripod/hand/carrying use.

I have the 7200, and I like it, but I would love articulated screen on the 5500. The image quality is going to be very similar but I almost bought the 5500 for the screen. I ended up with the 7200 for the buffer and the more customizable buttons, but I would love a reasonably priced model that incorporated a little bit more of both. Those comparison sites are your best bet!
