That makes sense to me, Bama! I don't think the two concepts are mutually exclusive. Some people want to do something just for fun. In our society, we seem to think everything has to be for making money to be legit, and I don't think that's the case. I remember an old James Taylor song where he referred to the days of playing his guitar "just for him"!! :-) :-)

The nail didn't bother me because the moodiness of the shot and his eyes was captivating.

Welcome to the Hog. I hope you are in a cooler part of CA than I am. Still 80 degrees at 4:00 a.m.! A friend uses a similar camera and lens to yours and get great Hummingbird and Insect images! General advice for photography, take it slowly, learn one lens, flash, camera at a time.

Great advice, thanks!!! I have felt overwhelmed at times when I take too much on at once.
I'm hotter in my area than you are. It's been in the 100's here. Beastly. Air quality poor too! Ychhh!

Thanks everybody for the many varied and excellent suggestions!!!! It just reminds me how much I have to learn. There are so many considerations to make in deciding to sell, at what price, what size given the cropping involved, where and how to print, and even the great question of where I want to go with this. I have been immersed in learning two cameras this year, lightroom, and the smug mug site. I'm still working in a private practice too.

I think I want to be a really very good photographer, at least intermediate if not advanced someday. I would like to use my photography to help people discover more about the nature of nature and wildlife. So I suppose selling is a part of that. But my focus is really not to make money as much as feel good about my work and make a difference.

As for the controversy, I have been on other forums and it always seems there are a couple of people who are more impressed with insults and arguments than helpfulness and kindness. It's a bit embarrassing for me to know so little about some of this, and I appreciate the respectful comments and support from the majority of you. Thanks again!!!

Get the print size the person wants and print it at your printer or go to a local camera store and get a high quality print cost. Call the person who wants a print and tell them what it will cost. That should be easy, I've done it many times with my prints. I just do it for personal pleasure and do not derive any income from the print.

Dalek, Thank you! This is also very helpful as I haven't printed any of my photos as yet. I've been pretty deep in this year with learning two cameras, lightroom, and smug mug, so this is just the next step I'm imagining. I didn't expect to be asked yet, and this is the second time so I suppose I should be working on this. I like the idea of going to a camera store and getting a good quality print. Really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks again.

In order to sell your pictures successfully you have to exude confidence. If you say no you will be at a disadvantage. Also, the buyer may just want to use your answer to get you to lower the price. Take three of your pictures and sell them to your wife. You can now truthfully say that you are just starting out and that you have only sold a few.

It is up to you to decide what sizes you want to make but make up your mind.

If you are offering to sell framed pictures at a show, frame stores like Michaels regularly have sales like 2 for the price of one or buy one, get one free. Get the ones which already have a mat. Double the retail price of the frame, add the cost of printing and add what you think your time is worth. This will be a good starting point. If you start selling a lot you can readjust your pricing.

But remember that you should only sell your best pictures and they must be very sharp. Good luck!

This is pretty funny, Geegee! I do think there are subtleties in answering these questions, and you have touched on a couple of them well. I confess I haven't printed, matted or framed any of my photos yet. That's a whole other question. It looks like I can search these questions as probably many have asked before me.

Good sound suggestions. Thank you!
