It's not just the specific heat of the two different molecules ... it has to do with the PHYSICS of the radiant energy ... a little bit like how the inside of your car is much hotter than the outside air ... the short wavelengths come through the glass ... warm up the surfaces inside ... and then the longer IR radiation cannot as easily pass back through the glass and is trapped....

And here's one where the net gives the context ...

Thanks for the very candid feedback.

Interesting that someone might think that the girls were playing basketball in kneepads :-)

Regarding the choice of aperture ... that is pretty much dictated by the venue ... I'm already shooting at very high ISOs and cutting it pretty thin on the 1/lens length for the shutter speed. I am often shooting wide open at 2.8 and never get the chance to be as thoughtful with "stopping down" as your suggestion indicates would make it a better shot.

I guess the choice of being at the 92mm was in an attempt to give "context" to the shot while still getting the expression.

Here's another from the same gym.

Some say "no ball - no shot" ... but sometimes it seems that the emotion of the players is important. Waiting for the serve. Feedback welcomed ... should I crop this tighter? Are there strong enough leading lines to pull you into the Libero's steady gaze?

Nice work ... keep the camera going a bit longer and you might even catch the illusive "green flash" ...

f9 1/80 ... 50 mm lens so I thought I was ok with shuttered speed. But will try taking it up to 1/125 or faster.

You need to bump up the shutter speed - at least 1/125th. I would also suggest f8 or higher for depth of field. Compensate low light by bumping up the ISO.

Thanks for the comments and detailed QC ... I don't think that this one will be printed large ... season is over ... I used this as the center picture on some 8.5 x 11 collage prints that I did for each of the 3 seniors on the team. I put this in the center and then placed a dozen or so images collected over their entire high school careers. They really got a kick out of seeing how much they had grown over the years ...

Again ... thanks for taking the time to comment in a way that helps me to grow in my skills..

Outstanding work. Is the school going to use this in a large poster? I am asking because there are 2 areas that you might want to touch up. The girl on the left, #6 has some old background between her right arm and side, missed in your mask. The other area is the same girl's left shoulder has some bleed through on your mask. You see the #9 coming through her shoulder and also #9's finger tips. I am trying to help and not nit pick. I do a lot of masking and I have to make a final look about 200%+ to make sure I don't miss anything. I never know if the picture will be made into a 35 inch poster.

I still want to say again your work was outstanding. Great job!

Thanks for the kind words ... these girls did work some MAGIC ... the team finished 2nd in their region this year ... after barely winning any matches last year. New coach ... new attitude ... and 2 new younger players that brought some Kick A$$ positive energy and attitude with them.

Tim,

I believe you matched all their sizes appropriately and placed them in the final image quite well, ....

The direction of the lighting seems to be mostly correct from left to right. There are a couple gals that this doesn't hold true completely, but very close, and is not really noticeable unless one really studied the photograph and was nit picking! Out of curiosity, are one or more of these girls your daughter(s)? Also, did you use an umbrella or umbrellas with your speed lights? Excellent job, Tim.

Best Regards,
Tom
Tim, br br I believe you matched all their sizes ... (show quote)

Tom,

You've nailed them all ... :-)

The lighting was "mostly correct" ... shot on 2 different days ... and yes ... there was one that was lit from the "wrong" side. I did work hard at sizing the images in a way to make the perspective seem believable.

Regarding the lighting. 3 lights total.

1) Flashpoint Rovelight 600 in a 22" beauty dish with a sock, about 7' up and camera left just slightly in front of the player to get strong side lighting.
2) Flashpoint Rovelight 600 in a 40" x 50" softbox at eye level and directly beside for fill (probably could have used a reflector here)
3) Yongnuo 568exII about 8' behind the player as a "kicker" / "hair light".

Fun Fact ... I'm new at this ... and used a recycle bin, a waste basket, and ball as my stand-in as I experimented with the lights while the players were off on the other side of the gym with the official school photographer. (the gym lights were all on during the shoot ... so I think I did pretty good with the "dousing the ambient" by using high speed sync, low ISO and high shutter speed :-)

Here is the final edit of the team composite that I put together for our school's 2016 varsity volleyball team. The final image is a composite of 8 images using off camera flash in the shooting and masking in photoshop to get the background completely black.
