JB - I took the original post as a theoretical question. Personally I've decided to wait 6months before ordering an 850.

Hey everyone. I have been enjoying your posts and gaining knowledge from those who've "been there". I have a question. I enter in a Vermont photo contest every year at our state's largest attended annual 10 day fair. This year was my 4th. The first year I got an honorable mention, I was so proud. Nothing since, which is fine. I do it for the love of my hobby and the experience of being involved. We're allowed three entries each among the several categories.

My question: Many photos that win are photos I personally think should not even be considered. They're often blurry, out of focus, immature looking shots (to me). I'm very curious to know, what is in the mind of judges? Do any of you judge at for your local contests? This year as we were picking up our entries post-fair we received a paper entitled, "12 Merits of an Image" which I'm sure they're saying are what judges look for in a contest image. There is nothing on the paper which says, "Should be sharp and clear but out of focus is okay too". The paper is all about sharp, infocus, great color, telling a story sort of thing. One judge even suggested that I should have used a different color matting. Isn't this supposed to be about the photo and not about the matting? I am confused.

Thank you so much for reading this and any thoughts you send my way.

Why would you listen to any a$@hole judge who believes they are THE arbiter of "worthwhile" photography? Such judges are basically stupid and very conventional.

I own both the D810 & the D500. I had the D850 on preorder but cancelled it. I was disappointed in the image quality improvements the D850 provides--no significant improvements. As far as the increased resolution of the D850 goes, I also have an A7R2. It's image quality pretty much matches that of the D850. And based on the capabilities of the Sony A9, I believe the next high resolution camera Sony releases-probably within a year-will suppass the D850 in every way. So last night I photographer all of my Nikon cameras and lenses and they will be for sale on eBay on Sunday.

How much better do you think your pics will be after the switch from Nikon to Sony?

I'd like to hear some opinions on this.

If the resources were available and you presently owned the D810 and D500 would you sell one or both and buy the D850?

-----

The 850 easily replaces the functionalities of both the 810 and 500. Plus it has many addition features not found in the 810 or 500. It is a no brained - buy the 850 and sell the other two.

The res has dropped back to 20mp vs. the other two, which are both 24mp. Nikon also dropped out the 2nd SD card slot, used in all the D7000 series, from the D7000 on through both the D7100, and the D7200. So what makes the D7500 more advanced? ... Is one better off staying with the D7100, or should a D7100 user consider the upgrade?

-----

Good question. The D7200 is designed as a top of the line camera. A pro camera in many respects. The D7500 was gelded so as not to compete with the top of the line D500. After examining both I decided on a D7200 to use with my 200-500 lens. This eclipse pic was taken with the D7200. Compare it with ones taken with the D500 or D7500.

Clearly you have no clue as to the grey market issue and all that is involved with them!

This post smacks of sour grapes. As in someone who cheaped out buying a grey market item and now cannot get it serviced.

You make your bed then you must lie in it.

Spoken like a Nikon SALESMAN who can't compete. You might get more sales if you carried a better inventory!

We vacationed for a week in Wyoning, Utah, and Nevada after the eclipse. So this pic is late. I didn’t see the eruptions and magnetic lines till after we got home. Tech Data: D7200, 200-500 at 480mm, Gitzo tripod with ball head, prime exposure f8 @ 1/20 second bracketed 5 exposures in 2 EV steps, no filters, only took pics during totality. Feel free to copy but, leave signature.

All in a single body?

You can't afford more than one camera? You can't decide which camera you need at any given time? How do you manage to get dressed in the morning? Do you wear the same clothes every day?

It looks like you wanted the camera first and are now trying to justify the expense.

You are absolutely right, for a camera, versatility is a terrible, terrible thing. While you are sending me that money we talked about, please also include a few haberdashery tips.

Actually, old man, it's based on facts. You know, those irrefutable things that make your opinions look silly. You are an text-book example of fear and envy from the Sony crowd.

Did I? I don't need any of them so I don't want any of them.

Most people don't need them either. Some people have no control over what they want.

So which one of us is missing the point?

-----

Just a friendly bit of advice. Self righteousness is not a pretty thing. If I were you, I definitely wouldn't buy a D850. There's no doubt it would be wasted on you. Instead, give that money to the poor. Or better still, send it to me.

For me, I've already preordered one from B&H. But, I have a NEED for a high res, studio, sports, high speed, DX sub, general use camera.

Comparable to the D500, D7200? Did you compare them? I did not miss the point.

You can have both a D500 and a D7200 for a total price less than a single D850. Each produces more MP than the D850 in Dx mode.

I don't have any Dx cameras but if I wanted one I could do better than $3300, especially with a used Dx camera.

On the other hand, one benefit of the D850 is that it will push the price of a used D810 down.

-----

Yes, you did miss the point. You're not buying a D500 camera - it is free.

For DX it's less than 21MP. There are lots of 24MP DX cameras that are going to be better, lighter and less expensive.

You're missing the point. This high res, FF body will turn out comparable results as the D500. That capability is thrown in for free.

Hardly a pro camera! It can shoot up to ISO 800??? Best AF for a Sony camera??? Does it do the famous Sony trick of overheating???

Please forgive any hyperbole. If you want a great studio camera - get the 850. For a great sports camera - the 850. For a great landscape camera - the 850. For a great DX camera - the 850. For a great PJ camera - the 850. For a great general use camera - the 850. For great DR, for great S/N... - the 850. What else can you call it except "THE WORLD'S GREATEST PRO BODY."

Like a stopped clock being right twice a day, Ken Rockwell got the 850 right. According to him, buying one is a no brainer.
